Quick question - I'm looking at upgrading my lock and was wondering is the New York (or whatever it is called) lock really the one to go for or is there any merit in the Evolution type ones?
I have an Abus one at the moment- supposedly one of their better ones but I am seeking peace of mind!
An enormous motorbike-type lock would not suit me. Have Googled a bit and asked a few mates, nobody really seems to know the merits of their various Kryptonite types. Obviously looking at this from a value point of view. Thanks.

I use both the New York and the Evolution mini on my bike. The New York is heavy but feels very secure especially when you don't leave much of a gap in the U. The Mini is much lighter but I wouldn't trust it as my primary lock. It's still a very solid lock but I like the reassuring weight of the New York!

An angle grinder seems to be used a fair bit these days to cut u-locks, so I reckon it doesn't matter too much what level of lock you have.

i.e. the top-range Kryptonite lock isn't necessarily a whole lot more secure than the entry level lock, unfortunately.

Well a top range kryptonite U lock while not more secure in the sense of better lock etc they do take a good while longer to grind through than a cheap ulock by the sheer virtue that they harden the steel more and the bars are actually physically thicker to cut through.
This along with actually using the lock correctly/good technique will make it a more difficult target. And take longer to steal , this makes it a better option over other locks only if used correctly.

I bought a Kryptonite Fahgetaboutit lock last year - It's so damn heavy that I really need to be leaving the bike out all day before I'll bother with it! If i were buying one now, I'd buy a mid-range Kryptonite. I reckon nothing will stop organised theft (i.e. using an angle grinder, van etc).
