?My iMac keeps spitting out the dvd/cd/software. I insert disk - it spins up - click and spits it out
Using Lion on the machine and machine out of warranty
can't run HW tests as they on disk - the drive shows in diskutility still and sysinformation

Any ideas what to do/fix it??

Check what console spits out every time the disk ejects itself

I'll check this out tonight. What should I be looking for? Would there be any entry? Incidently I've reinstalled the OS from the Lion recovery partition in a silly notion it might be hardware as in total the DVD drive has only had about 10 hours of use

Well there was no need to reinstall the OS. Just insert the disk, note the time when it gets spit out, and then go straight to console and check what it says for that time.

Failing that, check out drutil in the terminal, it controls the CD drive
