My macbook isn't booting up properly, it makes the usual sounds and goes to the grey screen with the apple icon and loading symbol but no further. Any suggestions?

    Moved to Mac
Sounds like its possibly a failed hard disk

Do you have an install disc you can boot from?

Hold Command-V while turning it on to boot in verbose mode. It will print out what it's doing as it boots, including any errors.

    I've done the Command + V thing.
Getting stuff like mds[23]: (Error) DiskStore: .......... Timed out
WARNING: sandbox_init error Cannot apply profile
Mds[23]: (Error) Store: Store check-in failed: (ipc/send) invalid destination port

Is the hard drive gone? How much would it cost to repair the laptop?

No, the disk isn't dead just yet, but the install is corrupt for sure. Of course, that doesn't mean the drive isn't dying!

You'll need the install disks to fix this yourself.

Regarding cost of someone else doing it, you'd need to call around! Are you in Cork as your name suggests? There's a CompuB store there that might help.

I'm in Norwich at the moment, the install disks are in Cork unfortunately, won't be back home for a couple of weeks.

There's an Apple Store in Norwich apparently! Give them a call!

What OS is on it? If Lion you can hold down Option on boot for recovery options without OS Disks

    Hi again,

I didn't manage to get an appointment in the Apple Store but I've got the install disks now. I tried to boot using them but everytime it says there is an error and I need to retry again.

I went to Disk Utility after that to try and repair the HD and got the following:

    Invalid node structure
    Volume check failed

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.

    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error

Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered:
The Underlying task reported failure on exit.
