Is this possible? I'd prefer to do it this way. I dont fancy the extortionate amounts the mentioned organisations charge

Check out the IIC in Boston, their prices are less and they allow you to book your own flights http://www.iiicenter.org/2011/08/11/j-1-irish-work-and-travel-program/

No you can't. The US Government don't have a system set up to deal with applications themselves for this visa from all over the world, so they extend it to third party companies who take care of it.

Pretty much sums it up. I asked around to see if i could do it. Frankly OP, its not that much money to spend. Given its going to cost €800 - 1000 anyway by the time you get there. I'm going to the West Coast, and its come in around €1100.

You can book your own flights with some companies but they charge the full VISA fee. You then have to sort out your own insurance, own flights etc. I think its worth the nominal amount they charge so you don't have to organize everything yourself, and thats coming from someone who would be well organized.
