    Hi there,

I've been thinking about re-training in computers, only thing is I'm not sure what area I'd be suited to! I hold a university degree and apart from bits of part time work. I sometimes wonder if the career that I am currently trained for is really suited to me, for various reasons. My university degree is not computer related.

Anyway, I have always been very good at computers and also really enjoyed working on them. The only problem is Maths is not my strong point. I did ordinary level maths for my leaving cert. I'm sure this would limit my choices in I.T.? Anyone have any idea of the type of jobs that I could apply for? Would there be many vacancies for those types of jobs? Also, where I could train for these types of jobs.

    Many thanks for your help!

you dont really neeed to be good at maths for the majority of IT jobs.

programming for example if you need a mathmatical formula to carry out a specific fuction although helpful you can get by with very basic level of maths.

as for sysadmin/network admin etc again a basic level and been able to use a calculator will get you by :)

The maths required isnt that bad, Ive have a degree in computer science and the maths required was at about leaving cert ordinary level standards.

    Cool... thanks for you posts..

I had a look at this website. Although it was American based it gave a good description of the jobs. Might be useful to someone else...

Network or system analyst, database admin and technical writing were the jobs that jumped out at me! Two of which were mentioned by another poster... so thank you.

Does anyone know if there are jobs in these areas in Ireland?

To be honest, there seems to be (at least according to the media...) loads of IT jobs in Ireland, but, mostly, if you have a huge amount of industry experience behind you, or, if you've got none, then you'll need to be willing to work in Dublin/Cork/Galway etc.

Most jobs advertised regionally e.g. Wexford, tend to need very specialised skills...

Also, it should be noted that when you enter IT as a profession, you will most likely have to endure helpdesk type jobs  ( Coupled with Minimum wage or similar for quite a while...) until you've built up the necessary skills/experience to start as a junior whatever  in the industry...

I Dont think you ,d need much math ,for computer repair ,maintenance ,i presume fas has training course,s in that area ,and theres basic starter courses avaidable.
I dont think things like web design ,graphics, require much math .
There,s a wide range of jobs in the it industry.

Now days nobody will touch you in development/coding without a degree or a huge level of proven work experience.

And your not going to walk into any specialised support role without some serious training first. And then at least some experience, even in passing. Start by looking for a first level helpdesk role on the phones. Then get trained up, specialise in something(database, UC, app/desktop virtualization, exchange etc) and move on. Expect money in around 18-20k to begin. Its not that hard to push on, you see the guys with some drive change roles every 3-5 years.

If you are going back to do an IT degree then you will need maths
I did a night course and had 2 years of maths which I hated as I failed maths for the leaving, but I managed to scrape the exams for college :)
    bloody Probability! :(
