Being from Cork I suppose it is Christy Ring but out of those I have seen play Ben O' Connor.

    Hurling- Mick Mackey

Of those I have seen, Declan Hannon is probably the most talented. But he has to play well over a few seasons before you could say he was the best, lots of talented players fade away. So I'll say Ciarán Carey.

    Football- John Galvin.

Hurling - Hard to call between Brian Corcoran and Ben O Connor

Football - Colin Corkery or Graham Canty.

On each I go for latter in both, but some tough calls.

In my lifetime Ollie Canning and Pádraic Joyce for Galway.

Kerry here so choice is incredible Best ever Mick O Connell

in my lifetime find it so difficult for sheer style and touch of genius Mikey Sheehy & maurice Fitz

    realistically though it,s Gooch

hurling Christy Walsh or more recently Shane Brick

So many to choose from...Eddie Keher to today's greats including modern players. Seen as I can't pick a footballer, I'll pick a

    defender= Tommy Walsh
    Forward= Henry Shefflin

Best overall hurler that I've marked/watched DJ CAREY, in my opinion, the greatest of my time

It's almost impossible to choose between Tommy Walsh and Henry Shefflin.
Both are completely different players from each other, but both are extraordinary.
Henry has the sublime vision that makes him the best playmaker I have ever seen. He is also cool, calm and intelligent during the match, along with being a brilliant free-taker and phenomenal goal scorer.
Tommy is unique for sure. He can easily play in any position from 2-15 and it defies logic how he can out-jump anyone and catch a high ball.

To give an answer for the thread I would have to say Henry. I have never seen anyone (from KK and around the country) that can do the things that he does on the hurling pitch.

    Dublin

Football - Brian Mullins back in the day and currently Alan Brogan

Hurling - Conal Keaney, out injured but I think he is the best hurler in the capital.

In Waterford, the history books will tell you John Keane.

The best that I've seen is Ken McGrath.

Current best hurler is John Mullane.

In Clare, in hurling Seanie McMahon for backs, Jamesie O'Connor for the forwards. In football, Francis McInerney or Noel Roche, would have to be Noel Roche because of his involvement in International Rules series.

    Dermot Earley.

We've been blessed to have all-time greats like Tony McManus, Harry Keegan, Bill Carlos and Jimmy Murray play in primrose and blue over the years but Dermot is in my humble opinion the greatest leader to ever take to a football field. He played the game with a rare honour and dignity and coupled that with being one of the most complete players of all-time, a wonderful midfielder, scorer and free-taker. He pounded the summer sod for Roscommon for twenty years, a starter almost all of that time, a feat almost unmatched. A mighty man.

    Tipperary:

    Football: Declan Browne.

Hurling: hard choice. Ill go with current - eoin kelly and previous John Leahy for pure skill and he could do anything on his day.

    Alan ahead of Bernard? Really?

In my lifetime best Galway hurler would have to go to Joe Cooney. Ollie Canning and Tony Keady were both outstanding, but for pure skill the original JC gets the vote.

In football it's an easy choice. Padraig Joyce is the best Galway footballer of his generation and a strong contender for best Galway footballer of all time. (he does have some stiff competition to be fair)

some strange choices though. John Leahy ahead of Nicky English????

    In Offaly,

Football: Matt Connor, sad that he only played till 25.
    Hurling: Brian Whelahan

    Wexford.

Hurling- all time: Nicky Rackard. Of my life-time: Liam Dunne.
Football- all time: Mick Carty or Matty Forde. Of my life-time: Matty Forde (with an honourable mention at club level to Colm Morris)

I was quite young at the time Matt was in his pomp but he still made an enormous impression on me WHAT a player he was absolutely superb!!

Just going on who i have seen play in the flesh for Waterford

Hurling: Ken McGrath with honourable mentions to Mullane, Paul Flynn and for sheer longevity Tony Browne

Football: Gary Hurney wouldn't look out of place in any intercounty team in the country as his performances for Munster in the Railway cup showed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 125 ✭✭duinegorm

Tony Browne. He's so good at hurling I'm going to pick him for football too. :D

    (Nah, Gary Hurney deserves it)

    Roscommon:

cureently, its probably Donal Shine for most people.
in my opinion, Senan Kilbride on his day could out play any man on the team, and most teams(apart from an obvious few).

he has some touches of magic, if only he wasn't so lazy and uninterested with the game.

Karol Mannion has been a servant to the county for many years too.

wasn't around for Dermot Early so can't really comment.

    Dublin

Football - Wasn't around for the likes of Brian Mullins or Kevin Heffernan so i'll go for John O'Leary. Most All Stars and for his unbelievable longevity.

Hurling - Not sure but of the current generation McCrabbers All Star was our first in a long time so i'll go for him.

This is the same fella that was shot up with painkillers during and after the Connacht final last year after he got a heavy shoulder injury and still spent most of his down-time over the next two weeks kicking shots over in Kiltoom, right?

Senan has got the bad habit of following the ball when it gets up near him and being too close to the man with the ball to cause optimum damage, but once he clicks back up to speed he'll be almost unstoppable. He's certainly not lazy, plenty of times you'll see him back in his own half-back line helping out. He'll be ready for Galway.

Cathal Cregg is my pick of our current players, he's absolutely electric and always brings it every game he plays. He's fast, smart and has become very good at offloading in the last season or so. He causes complete havok in opposing back lines. He's one of the very best half-forwards in the country.

From the players that I've seen DJ and Henry.

DJ was the most magical player I've seen play. He was Messi-like. I can remember a goal he got against Galway back in '97. I was sitting in the corner of the Canal/Hogan. Brian McEvoy launched a ball over his shoulder towards the goal. DJ jumped up, caught it and buried it. He shipped a heavy tackle as well but he brushed it aside. It mightn't be the greatest goal of all time but to me as a 7 year old it was perfection.

I could go on and on and on about Henry but I'm too tired for that. He is the greatest player I've ever seen. He isn't as flashy as DJ but he is by far the most intelligent player in the game at the moment. He just floats away from his marker and makes room for other players. One simple pass and he has 20 yards free to pick his point. He sees everything on the pitch and is 5 steps ahead of the pack. He doesn't have the speed in his legs any more but his brain is sharper than everyone else.

The way he came back from his cruciate problems is a testament to his character and drive. It's ridiculous to say it but he seems almost better now than before. The only other sportsman I could compare him to in that regard is the Brazilian Ronaldo. In a way it was possibly even more remarkable in that Shefflin was doing the hard yards in his own back yard at night and then getting up to go to work the next day. The effort he put in would have crushed a lesser man.

If I asked my dad then he'd list off all the greats from the 60s and 70s; Frank Cummins, Fan and Eddie Keher. He forgets the simplest of things around the house or when shopping but he can remember the most outrageous things in hurling. Pretty much ask of any all-Ireland and he'll know the score, who played well and where he was standing at the match.

As for football, well we have no one so I'm just going to nominate myself. I scored 4-6 in a trial for the school team back in 5th class.

Martin McHugh was the most talented, watched him tear teams apart single handedly, 1986 against Down springs to mind.

Tony Boyle except for injuries. Declan Bonner I think would have been up there with McCartan and Linden, the style of football in Donegal never showed his true potential.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

    Cork:

Ben o Connor. Ever since i have watched the game of hurling he has been the best i've seen. His first touch was unbelievable. His ability to take points from anywhere on the field was remarkable. His engine would keep going all day. Often I remember ben in the backline helping out when he was playing corner forward! He pulled cork out of the s**t so often i've lost count. An absolute genius of a player! Hard to find another player in the country that matched ben in his day!

Hurling-At present Mullane. Ken is probably the best I've ever seen.

Football-Brick I would say. Shane Walsh in his prime is in my opinion the best we've had in my lifetime. Hurney is good, don't think he's quite as good as some suggest though.

    From what i have seem

    In Hurling - Tony Browne

In Football - Kieran Power - he was coming towards the end of his playing days when i saw him play. His son (also Kieran) is now playing minor and has the potential to be a fine footballer and an even better hurler.

Hurling: A toss between Ben O Connor and Joe Deane, both very intelligent players and lovely striking and first touch.

    Football: Larry Tompkins

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,779 ✭✭✭Carawaystick

Kevin O'Brien by a long way the best footballer in Wickla, in my time, if not all time.

All Star, AI club champ, Ireland caps against Aus in int. rules only go a tiny bit of the way to saying how good he was.

I remember one (bad) day up on the Hill watching Kildare destroy us 3-20 to 1-2 or something desperate like that, he got a wonder goal and the point he scored was Messi-anic, went past about 9 kildare lads to score.

Haven't seen enough hurling over the years to make a good call, but Leighton Glynn is the handiest I've seen in blue and yellow.
We were hammered by Laois in a league final in Semple some years ago; a Cat patronisingly said they'd leave the rest but would bring him to training.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,706 ✭✭✭premierstone

In hurling I would say a straight battle between Nicky English and Eoin Kelly, hard to seperate them really. English scored goals that no one else could or would have scored but Kelly scored and still scores points that no one else would even attempt, best forward I have ever seen with he's back to the goals.

In football Declan Browne and it aint even close.

In my time (recent past) the best Dublin players I have seen are Joey Boland and Bernard Brogan.

Over the years Brian McMahon was always superb for Dublin when Hurling was defo the poor relation honarable mention for Joe Towell

Bernard Brogan of the 70 teams was superb player. Gerry Hargan probably the most underrated player I have seen
