Outstanding claim and renewal of Insurance

    Hi all,
My wife is an owner of a '98 car. I am a name driver.

On 24th of April 2012 I need to pay for renewal.
Because we had 2 accidents last year our insurer is asking for around €1600!!

    Accidents dates:
    05/06/2011 - Settled (glass breakage)
    26/03/2011 - Settled (2nd accident)
    11/01/2011 - Pending.... (1st accident)

1st at all I don't understand why they are listed here glass breakage (€231!!!) as I have Full Comprehensive insurance.

    2nd question is:
Can I sell this '98 car , buy any other one and get Insurance for myself + add my wife as a name driver??

Can I change Insurance company when I have one claim outstanding??

    what is NCD scale A??
It says here that I'm on lvl 2 now.

    Q1
The glass breakage is still a claim. All full comp does is pay out for broken glass without you having to pay the usual policy excess and without affecting your NCB. It's still on record as a claim against your policy and must be declared on your NCB certificate.

    Q2
You can try but it mightn't work out any cheaper. Factor in cost of changing car, your personal insurance history and your wife's history. 3 claims in 6 months  is not a good way to start.

    Q3
You can try changing insurer but again it mightn't work out any cheaper because your NCB Certificate will show 3 claims in 6 months  (again) one of which is still outstanding. Very likely this might cause another insurer to load you heavily if they don't decline you. The value of the claims has to be factored in too.

NCB Scale - check your policy document, it might show what these mean. I think different insurers use different terms e.g. some insurers might use level 0 = 0% discount, level 7=70% (max discount).

Just because you have a full comprehensive policy still doesn't mean you have windscreen/glass cover. Some insurance companies still charge extra for this when taking out the policy.

Did you have a windscreen claim on June 2011? If so, why wouldn't they list it.
Windscreen claims might not affect your NCB, but it's still a claim, and must be listed. Even for the purposes if you were swithing insurer, and new insurer doesn't offer windscreen claims not affecting NCB.

I don't know if you can do it while there is outstanding claim.

Surely that should be explained somewhere in you policy or other policy documents.
Maybe it means you have 2 years NCB, but i'm just guessing.

But even if he has windscreen cover, any windscreen claim would be still listed on NCB statement, no matter if it affects NCB or not.

Thank you for so quick answers.

Yes, I have a cover on glass - I am just wonder is that affect my discounts.
I don't see any explanation what NCD is...

It is not my 1st year of insurance. I have this car and insurance from 2008 till my 1st accident in January 2011 I had no accidents or claims.

Most insurance companie offer windscreen cover which doesn't affect your no claims discout. But to be sure, just check in you policy document.
Anyway - even thought this one doesn't affect your discount, there are 2 other claims that would affect it. One of which is not sorted yet, so it will probably affect it further when it will be sorted..

Many insurers will not give you a policy if you have a claim in the last 3 years, let alone one which is still open and has been pending for 15 months. Ring around if you wish to change but Id say youll find it difficult.

Who was driving for the two accidents? If your wife was driving for both then you could take out your own policy which would work out cheaper (as you would not have a claim against your name), but I cant see it being cheap to add her as a named driver with two claims against her name in less than 18 months.

Bottom line is that there may not be a cheap way out of this. Two accidents in a year and a bit is going to have expensive consequences. The €1600 should drop quickly enough once you start building up a NCB again.

A claim for glass doesnt usually mean anything in terms of discounts or moving insurers. I have had glass replaced under insurance on a few of my cars and it has never been an issue when it comes to renewal.

NCD is no claims discount. You would need to check with your insurer how they define each level, but I would hazard a guess that Lvl 2 is probably 2 years no claims bonus, or 20% discount. Depending on the type of policy you may have something like step back NCD cover, which means that a claim will knock your NCD back two steps or something like that (instead if losing it completely).

    That actually makes sense.
If he has a step-back then one claim has reversed it back to 2 years, and another claim didn't affect it yet, as it was not settled so far.

    To reply of previous post:

January - my wife was driving

No insurance company will take your wife on while there is an outstanding claim, either with a policy in her own name or as a named driver on your policy so you have to stay with your current insurer.

As for the claim settlement time frame,as its a personal injury case then its anyones guess how long it will take.Ive seen claims settled in a months and Ive seen claims outstanding for over 3 years so there is no answer you can get Im afraid.

    @Otis, Thank you

What I can do If i'm 100% sure that there was no personal injuries, as this person was only reverse to my bumper but I couldn't prove it so he take this accident as "you drove into my bumper" on a front of Insurance company after a few days?
This guy was driving quite new car, all this happen on a traffic light when he was starting to move - he put a reverse gear instead os 1st.
Insurance company for last year is like: "cars are moving forward by idea, so even if he revered into you thats mean you haven't keep enough distance"

If liability is in dispute, that is,you say he was at fault but he says you were at fault, then it could drag on for a long time.

That coupled with possible injury claims mean you cant really do anything Im afraid.

3 claims in a year? It's going to be hard to move insurance company now.

Also not sure what the year of your car has to do with any of this but you mentioned it twice.

my partner a provisional licence driver ,with 1 years no claims bonus had an accident last week and has admited liability for damage done to the other car which would come to 700euros .She has 1 year no claims and her insurance came down last year.Would she be better settling her bill without claiming from her insurance and continue to get a reduction in her insurance .
