Astra Airbag Module Issue

    Hi,

Bit of a strange one for you. Picked up a fantastic specimen of a 2001 Astra Bertone 1.8l (only 50k on the clock) in early October. Guy was a car nut and had every receipt of every service etc.

On almost every fix from 2005-> it had been noted by the mechanics that the Airbag Warning Light was always on. In 2 or three of the services, the problem was investigated, without any luck. However, it is indicated on one from 2009 that the Airbag sensor is working fine, and the airbag is fine too, however they still couldn't figure out the issue with the warning light.

This wouldn't be a problem, as the warning light isn't a big deal, until I've discovered that as of new MOT regulations this January, when I go to get it MOT'd in November, all warning lights must be clearly shown to switch on with ignition, and then off.

I've had the car looked at by a certified Vauxhaul/Opel garage, and they're quoting me almost 500 pounds to fix it! Which seems like they'd just replace something massive to fix something small.

Has anyone ever come across a similar problem? Any suggestions of things that I might try or investigate?

As an aside, the rear window "demister lines" (heater yokes) have never worked, and I've replaced the fuse to see if that would help. A friend had previously mentioned that there could easily be a connection between the two if they were part of the same wiring setup? Is this nonsense?

    thanks!

Hi Emmet, seeing as nobody else on here is weighing in, here's my tuppenceworth!
I have heard in the past of airbag warning lights being triggered after somebody sticks a hoover under the driver's seat and catches/knocks off the sensor in there without realising it.
Also, check out the link below. HTH.

Christ, these problems are like buses- nothing for ages and then two come along at the same time! Just spotted this;http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056601318

  • Bump.

I've managed to source a new airbag module from a breakers for a staggering £15 (quoted £425 at garage inc labour).

Anyone know where I could get a guide for installing it? I don't want to buy it and then figure out I don't even know where I put it!

I understand I'll struggle to get the warning light reset, but at least when I bring it for pre-MOT checkup they can reset it without having to buy more parts.

    Cheers.
