Will a UK tv work in Ireland?

I have a tv that I bought in the UK last year. (It has a freeview box installed in it) I'm bringing some things home and I'm wondering if it will work if I get a saorview box or should I just sell it?

If it supports Freeview HD, it might work.

Freeview Standard Definition won't, as RTE NL broadcasts using MPEG4 for all channels.

Obviously, it will work no problem whatsoever with a set top box for Saorview, Cable or Satellite.

I have a free view hd TV from the north and I get saorview on it, but only saorview no free view.

    Post the make & model.

Any TV with SCART and/or HDMI will work with external Saorview Set box.

    Without a box:
Some UK Freeview TVs "work" (not many) to a lesser or greater extent (usually only Pan-European models).
Most UK "Freeview HD" sets will "tune in" but not work completely if solely for UK market.

If it's less than 42" or more than 2 years old sell it and buy a better quality 42" Saorview HDTV.

But you are probably not near the border or don't have an aerial pointing north.

"Freeview HD" is technically compatible with Saorview although teletext is rather hit and miss, it will do picture and sound.

Basic "Freeview+" isn't compatible at all.

At least one "Freeview HD" setbox mysteriously doesn't work with Saorview. A Technisat. It can do video in a window in MHEG interactive but otherwise has a blank screen. Odd that.

There can be problems using UK TVs with analogue cable because some don't tune VHF. Obviously for the OP if he's planning on going with a terrestrial solution that won't be a problem.

I'm close to border about 10 miles, and have aerial in loft but can't pick up free view no matter how much I play with aerial. I have teletext though:)

Wait til October and you will have a better picture of what you will and wont get. If you are that near you should be fine.

What type aerial do you have ?

Post your location & a list of the UHF channels or frequencies your various services are received on.

I would think your only hope of getting Freeview atm would be to move the relevant aerial outside. It's probably the top one with the other 2 being for Irish channels from a mix of local relay & main site.
