Career choice uncertainty

    Dear boards.ie members,

I have a difficult choice ahead. I am currently studying a Springboard conversion course into IT, and I'm doing quite well in it. However, I have a degree and even some experience in product design, a field where most of the jobs are abroad.

Recently, I have been offered two part-time temporary contract jobs in progressive start-up companies, which are both paid and related to the field of product design. Both are six month contracts, without further guarantee of continuation. Actually, the continuation of my employment will depend on the quality of my input. This is something that I really want to be involved in and my aim is working in research and development, which partly involves start-up business principles. However, this is a massively competitive area.

Here's what makes my choice difficult: I can't tell whether I'm in a good position to get hired into a basic IT job, such as database development or software testing. However, I have a feeling that I have a better chance of getting them than some graduates of 4 year IT degree programmes, because they would prefer jobs with higher salaries and much more advanced projects.

My question is, should I take a risk and work in start-up companies with little guarantee of further employment or should I continue studying for an IT qualification, given the current economic situation?
