    Hi
Have 1.9 skoda octavia diesel about 180km on it.
In grt nick. Driving great. Good on fuel.

    Due nct.
I hear vibration coming from what I am told is the fly wheel.
    Gears working perfectly.

Is this vibration a reason to fail nct?
It's not effecting working/driving/ safety of car. I know it will cause clutch damage if not replaced in time.

Clutch was replaced after nearly burnt out 4 years ago trying to pull caravan up a hill! Wrong turn!!
Can you get spurious/ refurbished flywheel.
    Thks

It will pass the nct. As long as the clutch works. Being a dual mass flywheel it is going to be quite expensive. A fella called George Daltonon here would probably be able to give you an exact price off the top of his head.

    Indeed I can. €700 ;)

Solid flywheel kits are available for these to replace the dual mass one much better job

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 249 ✭✭minder2009

    ah thks

    I wonder are these cheaper?

    Where would you get one?

Are they spurious or specifically for each model of car?

    Thks
    again

The good quality solid kits with a Valeo brand clutch are around the same price as an Luk brand DMF. They are fine to use in terms of reliability but do lead to some extra gearbox noise at idle. This is not an issue for some people but for others is a big turnoff and I know of people who have fitted solid flywheel kits only to take them back out again after a short time due to the noise. Have a listen to the noise at the link below. Your car wouldn't be as badly affected as the car in that video but that is the kind of noise you will get just not as loud.

There are cheaper solid kits out there to suit your car as well but they are a bit of an unknown quantity in terms of quality. The clutch kit has no recognised brand name on it and for that reason I would be wary of using one.

ok george thks / i see one on micks garage for 380 ususal price 570! i wonder is this one that you would use?

I sent it by email....sales@daltons.ie ......cant seem to send link on this thks

Yes I got that mail thanks. The €380 part is literally just the flywheel. It is advisable to change the clutch and release bearing at the same time as the flywheel.

For €700 we supply and fit the flywheel complete with new clutch and also a new clutch release bearing. See the links below for the exact parts. Parts will be either Sachs as below or Luk depending on which supplier I use.

Another reason I will never buy a modern Diesel again!

I had an 05 Caddy Van and the flywheel went after 15,000 kms, and a wheel bearing.

06 DSG Caddy after 30,000 kms.

02 passat after 90,000 miles started showing signs of failure.

It seems that it is mostly the 2nd hand buyers of Diesels today that get stung, so the value of saving a few quid on petrol goes totally out the window!

I'm a converted Hybrid fan now, I loved Diesels back in the day they were hard to start, noisy as hell, and smoked like an old steam engine. But they lasted forever!

George I am going to leave the fly wheel on long finger for a while as doing small mileage and the vibration is only slight will keep an eye , a mechanic reckons the front left shock absorber may not pass NCT. I wonder what price approx would it be to replace it? I am in Meath. Would travel if you can do it while I wait or in hour or two thks ps diesel skoda Octavia 1.9 190km on it thks again

To supply and fit a genuine front shock is €110 or €200 to do both. I would strongly recommend changing both at the same time although changing just the faulty one will get you through the NCT ok.

€700 is a good price of George especially with the OEM parts he's using..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

The parts we use are Luk or Sachs. To be fair it looks like the lad on Donedeal is selling the same parts that we fit so quality wouldn't be an issue. Does anyone know how much he charges for common flywheels like the 1.9TDI unit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,880 ✭✭✭2012paddy2012

I don't think he fits them , tho..... George I am getting a price this morning for fly wheel job , I have your 700 price at back of my mind to compare ... It's just I leave in Meath . . So I am just seeing if its better value to travel to you or get it done local .... Ps .... Is it still 700 ..... !?

My cost price on the Sachs kit has increased in the past few months so the price is now €750.

Bollocks, ya must be driving about with your foot on the clutch to destroy it so quick. Mine has 180k with no rattleson the original DMF, anyway who wants to drive about in a tumble dryer?

I quiet like the Prius to be honest, not the most exciting but better than a van and great fuel economy.

I'm not joking about the DMF going in the 05 caddy van and wheel bearing after 15,000 kms and in the 06 caddy after 30,000 kms the dmf went and if you don't believe me you can ask Sinnott's in Wicklow Town.

I got no problem or no questions from Sinnotts, they were really great to deal with. It is a known problem.

you were either very unlucky or very hard on a dmf for it to fail so quick

Don't think so, I had driven diesels for at least 250,000 miles before all vag, the straight non turbo was a gem, lasted forever. The ALH Engine TDI also was a gem and lasted forever. No problems until the new model Caddy.

Have a price new clutch fly wheel fitted including labour 600 euro ....
Seems good value ..... Is there a catch I wonder!? What should I ask the mechanic !? , besides make of fly wheel etc.....?
    Thks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

At that price it is likely to be one of the cheap no-name solid flywheel kits rather than the OEM spec Sachs or LUK kit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,880 ✭✭✭2012paddy2012

Will check on that , George , thanks , will let ye know .... May be handy for Meath people!!!

When you look in to the engine Octavia and to the left ... I understand there is a 3 digit number on a cap ... Timing cap !? This reference number indicates the type / make of the fly wheel fitted... Where exactly is this number in engine .. I want to see what type of fly wheel was fitted ? Thks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,882 ✭✭✭sc86
