The club website seems to be down so I was just wondering whether anyone might be able to give me some info on the club as I'm considering joining.

I know the midweek runs are around the Bushy Park area. Does anyone know the timetable (sessions and times) for seniors?

Does the club have access to any track? If so, which one, and what days/times does this training take place?

And lastly, how much is the joining fee?

    Thanks in advance :)

They train Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7, and they have long runs and other sessions on the weekend sometimes
Are you using the right website?
    http://www.sportsworld-terenure.ie/
    works for me

(You should wait until after the Terenure 5 mile to join, so you don't have to help run it ;):pac:)

They train Tuesdays and Thursdays. Using Tymon and doing crazy hard interval sessions on the roads from what I'm told. emerald007 is a member, you'll usually find him in the BHAA thread.

Yeah that's the one I was looking at - my home internet connection is shocking and rarely works well. Can usually just about manage to get 30 minutes on boards before it dies.

They're the most suitable times I've come across in my research. A lot of the clubs kick off at 6/6:30 and are based that little bit further from town - would be a bit tight with trying to get out of work, buses etc.

Am most interested in finding out about Sportsworld's track facilities.

Am running in Kildare the day of the 5 miler I think... I'm already showing poor commitment :o:rolleyes:

They don't have access to a track.

Donore do though :D Don't be fooled by the 6:45 start time on the site. We start training at 7pm - 7:10pm

They train in bushy in summer and around Rathfarnham/ butterfield ave area in winter. seems to have a very big membership and cater for all levels. I think they rent Tallaght AC's track for training sometimes.

CL, Tallaght is the only club near you that has access to a track, and with the new house move it won't be that far. The only other one that might suit and has a track is Crusaders as they use irishtown track I think?

P.S. don't tell ray where you're moving to as he will try to recruit you ;)

    Moving?
    To Knocklyon?

**** that sportsworld **** and get down to Bros Pearse! 7pm training Tuesdays and Thursdays too, Sunday long run group, grass track, 100m track, long jump pit...

Hands off there. She said she want's a track, not a 100m strip of grass

I'm a member of Sportsworld and I like the club, although I have to admit I haven't been to a training session for a while. There usually is a good turnout and during the summer months the training is held in Bushy Park. Training starts at 7pm but it's usually a few minutes after that before people seem to get organised and do stuff.

I'm not totally sure where they train in the winter, I think it's mostly around Rathfarnham as other's have said so I imagine the surfaces are mostly tarmac and concrete.

The membership went up this year and I think it is now €90 or €100 for the year, I can't remember which.

They are open to all levels of fitness with me pretty much being the slowest person they have on the books! :o

You can pop down any Tuesday or Thursday and train along for free a couple of times to see what it's like and there's no obligation to join.

We have a 330m strip of grass ;) AND a series of fields AND a hill AND a 100m track and long jump pit :p

AND we're not in Tallaght :D

But seriously - don't make up your mind on a club until you've been to a couple of sessions.

Don't know any one in sportsworld or anything, but from the outside I like the way they always have strong participation at provincial xc races and especially so on the women's teams. I think it's a good sign for a club if they are willing and organised enough to travel outside the m50 to race.

I'd agree with asimonov, sportsworld do have a decent womens team. But the problem is they dont have a track. i've trained with sportsworld and the sessions are very good, but it can be hairy tearing around bushy park jumping over dog leads, being chased by dogs, dodging pedestrians, not to mention the surface underfoot being a bit ropey. And during the summer on fine evenings bushy park is a nightmare its so packed.
Yeah im biased but the track in tallaght is the business, the group sessions are coming along nicely too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,199 ✭✭✭G-Money

Agreed, during the summer Bushy Park can be very busy and you do need to watch out for people with dogs, people on bikes etc. However Rathfarnham also train in Bushy Park during the summer and I guess have the same issue. As far as I know they don't have a running track either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭emerald007

Only getting to this thread late but would suggest you just drop down to one of the sessions and ask for Emily.

Some of members will hit irishtown track mid week and there are saturday sessions on the track in tallaght. Ask at the club.

Thanks for all the advice lads.

I love the idea of track sessions but I just don't think Tallaght will be feasible for me in terms of getting out of work in the evenings, distance, traffic etc. I'm joining a club so that I can learn and improve, and training sessions are going to be a big part of that. I know the majority of my training will still be solo but I do want to get the benefit of some specifics guided by a coach. It would probably be foolish to join a club knowing making sessions on time would be a struggle.

I think I'll head over to Bushy on Thursday evening and check Sportsworld out for a start :)

CL - I joined Crusaders as they train right beside where I work, which is right next door to where you work :)

[Also tried Phoenix Park Runners aka Civil Service]

A lesson I learned from being crap at rugby for 20 years, is that the seasons I enjoyed were when I was able to get to training from work. So there is no point in me [living and working in town] joining DSD or where ever, for example, where I have zero chance of getting down to train with them.

Thanks Vagga. I've considered pretty much most clubs around Dublin at this stage. I decided against Crusaders as I didn't want to find myself in town at 9pm after a training session - would rather start making my way home, train, and then be close to dinner afterwards. I have enough time to get out to Terenure by 7pm with my hours these days, as start at 8am. Joining Crusaders would also mean hanging out in the office until 7pm on days that I otherwise wouldn’t have to which I don't find overly enticing… :)

Are DSD an option for you? I don't know what they are like myself but I *think their training sessions start at 6.30pm.

DSD not an option time wise – although I did note on their website that they’re looking for people to take training courses to coach which I’d love to do…. Sometime… in the future… when I learn how to run myself first obviously! :)

Headed down to the club with Digger last Thursday and met the crew. Really nice bunch of people of varying levels which was nice and reassuring. It was a Fartlek session so c.1 mile w/u, 4 miles @ 7:30 average and 1 mile w/d. I really enjoyed it and it was definitely a session that I wouldn’t have held pace on, on my own. Am looking forward to the speed session tonight, and can see myself really enjoying and progressing with club sessions.

Fee is €90p/a and covers all the usual costs – Emily Dowling was lovely and told us to try out a few sessions before paying up which was dead sound in fairness to her. I think I might pay up tonight though so I can purchase a vest to wear at the K Club 10K on Saturday… ;)

Times and location are perfect for me in terms of distance from work, work hours (for the minute anyway – I suppose the recession is good for something!) so I’m pretty happy with that decision. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭tonyangelino

Actually you dont need a club vest for bhaa races-anything will do.. In fact club vests can be a bit annoying in BHAA races-its based on running for your company not running club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

Yes, lots of club runners don't wear their club singlets in BHAA races

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,663 ✭✭✭claralara

Oh I won’t be running for my company. If only my employers were mildly encouraging towards anything apart from work… ;) And it won’t be to place as a club member or anything. It’d be more for the novelty of actually being part of a club for me – not to show off… If I’ll look silly, I’ll refrain.

Nothing wrong with wearing club singlet at BHAA race. People do do it. It's about representing your club/affiliation.

Maybe it's only you that thinks that? No pressure to wear your club singlet to any race if you want to wear something different. This is such an Irish thing and the sort of attitude that puts some slower runners off wearing their club singlet in races.

Represent your club at the local parish race if you want CL. Thats why you have a singlet.

    Eh?

Bhaa, wear any vest ideally not a club vest.
    AAI race , club gear
Charity or any other race , any gear

thats how I would see it but if you wanna wear club gear while running a business house race thats your call.

In terms of subset of sportsworld members who are also BHAA members I'd say there is a 50/50 split in those that do and don't wear the club singlet at BHAA events. CL - I hope this dilemma doesn't put you off

Go for it, wear the club vest. Its actually one of the better looking club singlets so fire away.

I think the etiquette is that in an AAI race, or a club race like the Terenure 5, the team prizes are based on clubs. You wear your club singlet so runners from other clubs know that you're part of the competition, that passing you out will get their team points.
In BHAA races, the teams are based on companies or sectors. You should wear your ESB top instead of your club top because that's who you're competing for and it lets runners from other teams know you're running against them.
If you're not in a team, it doesn't really matter what you wear.

Are the BHAA races open to anybody or just companies? Thinking of doing the 5mile in RTE.

    Sorry for the threadjack

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

Open to everyone. You can join BHAA for 15 euro and then each race is 10, or just enter a single race for 15 euro.
See the BHAA thread for more details

    I know, Incredible…

This thread was created in order to get some advice on joining a club. Every contribution was useful and there was a bit of friendly banter. I wrote after I'd joined Sportsworld to let people know what decision I'd made and to thank them for their input and advice. There is absolutely nothing 'showy' in my looking forward to wearing my club's gear. Quite the opposite - I would not want people looking at me coming over the line in 50 minutes thinking 'God help her club'. Excuse me for not knowing the correct 'etiquette' of BHAA - I only joined on Tuesday!

Tonyangelino's post now has me worrying about the fact that I will be running as an individual, and not for my company/industry (because, as I said above, there is no promotion of these races within my firm or many others in my practice area from what I can see). Well done on trying to make people feel welcome - Tony, maybe your time would be better spent promoting the league across workplaces and not making gratuitous and unnecessary comments.

:pac: I don't work for ESB, I'm not on a company team at all. There are sector teams as well - 'Food', 'Construction', 'Accountants', etc - but I couldn't be arsed trying to get an 'IT' team together...

I can only imagine the banter such a team would have… ;) If I tried to set up a team from my sector, I suspect it'd be in minus points from late cancellations and DNS's… Infact, we'd probably charge the BHAA for our entry and attendance… ;):D

Regarding the etiquette for BHAA attire. I generally wear the first thing that comes to hand, sometimes that's my work singlet, sometimes it's a plain old t-shirt, sometimes my club vest. I don't think anybody really cares. Also as there is a solid core of BHAA runners everybody generally knows who is running with which company etc so company colours aren't that important and in fact a lot of companies don't have standardised company colours anyway. Don't see what the big deal is here.

Don't worry about that at all, I am not a member of the BHAA and ran nearly all of the cross country races this year as an individual, wasn't running on behalf of a company or anything and there wasn't a bit of bother. Nobody blinked an eye, in fact the BHAA will be just delighted to have more people at their race! :) As regards to attire, I run for a club but never wore my club singlet at these races but just purely because my coach told me not to and I knew in advance, my advice, wear whatever you want, again nobody will blink an eye! Hope this hasn't put you off BHAA races, they really are the business and you should have a great day on Saturday. See you there!

    Good point CL...

I have worked for companies who played Softball, Touch Rugby, Netball and a few other things - and not one who knew a thing about BHAA.

Well done Claralara on joing a club. You will reap a load of benefits from that, both on the social side of things as well as seeing your running times improve.

As regards what you wear at BHAA races - wear whatever you feel like but more importantly enjoy the race and the spread afterwards.
