Hi guys I decided to take up running about 4 weeks ago due to other people in the house who are into it and plus Id let to get fit. I'm wondering what would be a good time for a guy in his early twenties to do a half marathon in, currently my time is at 2hrs and 7 minutes Ive heard different times which should be good for my age like 1hr and 20 minutes or at least 1hr and 40 minutes.
Im not to sure as as Im new to this so any information or advice would be great

You've run a half marathon in your first four weeks of running

There is no real answer to that. We have no idea how fit you are, or what your weight is.

Running 21k in 2hr 7min is OK for someone of your age with little or no training.

If you train properly, you should definitely be able to run quite a bit faster.

1hr 40 min is a respectable target for a first race, if you are fit and put in the training.

    1hr 20min is a pretty high target.
In the Dublin half marathon last year, out of 6000 results, 64 did this time or better.

ya started with ten km every second day the first week, than I upped it to 15 the next and floated around 15km for 2 weeks and than did 21km But I'm still doing a 10km during the week days with sprints (don't know if that helps but the lad I run with says it will get my endurance up)

Cheers man I'm 6ft 1 and weigh just under 12stone, I do a bit of surfing whenever I can and used to do kickboxing so Id say while Im not fit Im not completely out of shape. Im planning on taking part in the Limerick Great run so Ill try aim for around the 1hr 40min mark

The biggest mistake you'll make is going out too fast on fading. There'll be 1hr 40 min pacemakers at the GLR, so stick with them at least for the first half of the race. If you feel good after 15km or so then push on a bit.

2:07 to 1:40 in 4 weeks is a big jump but given that you are young, fit and slim 1:40 is a reasonable time. Just make sure to keep your training consistent for the next few weeks and take it easy the week before the race.

Cheers bud ya generally I fly it for the first 15km and then start to fade around 16 or 17km, the fella Im running with has been helping me to try and pace myself and the 21km I did today I was able to knock off 10 minutes, so Im hoping I will be able to improve on this in the next few weeks, sound for the advice

You're a natural runner if you can go from zip to those sort of distances so soon. My tuppence worth
    • watch out for overuse injuries through having done too much too soon. Back off if in doubt.
    • you'll definitely run faster under race conditions
    • you'll have a far better idea of your potential after your first race. Get that done and reassess. Like huskerdu I'd say 1.40 - 1.45 is a realistic target from the info you've given.
    Good luck.

What is a good time is a relative thing. Some people would consider 65 minutes a poor time for a half, if those people can run 59-60. Don't worry about what others think is a good time and isn't a good time. There will always be about a million people better than you, and about a million people worse than you. Just try to constantly improve.

    Don't.

There is no need to keep running 21k in training at the moment. Run a few shorter distances more regularly during the week, and then a longer one at the weekend. But don't go full pelt, just take it easy and run whilst chatting with your mate. If you can't chat then slow down.

I wasn't actually suggesting that you run 1.40 in 4 weeks time.

Take the advice here about not overdoing it before the Great Limerick Run.

Put a proper training plan in place to improve your time steadily over the summer.

No won in mid 1:17 though 1:16 would have been managable if I had pushed some more.
Ya still chasing that 75 min target and thats a decent time on a honest course.

    And I probably am a tosser alright:D
