Can someone explain to me the difference between the two? Are they both Operating systems? Someone asked me once what operating system did my HTC HD Desire use and I thought it was HTC sense but he said its probably gingerbread or ice cream parlour not HTC sense. I looked in my phone infomation and it said OS type HTC sense. Im confused.

HTC Sense is a skin. It sits on top of your OS. It changes the look and feel of the OS.

Other skins you can search for in the Market are

    Launcher Pro
    ADW Launcher
    Nova Launcher
    Go Launcher

They're all equivalents to HTC Sense. You can install any of them on your phone to try them out. If you install multiple Launchers a handy app is a Home Switcher

They allow you to change your default Launcher. So if you install a new skin and don't like it you can use that app to set HTC Sense back as the default.

I've a HTC phone and I'm currently using Go Launcher. They offer some different features such as different widgets, themes, changing of icon sizes etc. etc.

To find your OS go to Settings - About Phone - Software Version

Look at the Android Version. If it's 4 you're on Ice Cream Sandwich
    If it's 2.3 then it's Gingerbread
Here's a handy link for all the versions that have been released so far.

Most of those guys are using different Launchers to achieve the affects and looks that you'll see in those screenshots.
