The former Kerry footballer John Egan has died at his home in Cork at the age of 59.
Recognised as one of the best corner-forwards of all time, Egan won six All-Ireland football medals including four-in-a-row between 1978 and 1981.
He captained Kerry in their attempt for a record five titles in-a-row in 1982, but they were beaten in the final by Offaly.
Egan also won four National Football League titles, five All Star awards and nine Munster Championships.
Egan, a retired Garda, died at his home at Elm Park in Cork city.
He is survived by his wife Mary, his son John, and his daughter Maureen.

A sad day and I for one am shocked to hear the news, he was the darling son of sneem and the ill-fated Captain at the wheel the day a rotten ref gave no free to Seamus Darby in 1982.

He was too young to leave this earth and I hope he can meet with that other great lost son of the Kingdom Tim Kennelly in the vast expanse of the unknown as he moves on.

    Terrible news. RIP

A brilliant footballer, who was always ranked higher by direct opponents than some of the other 'bigger names' on that great team.

Anybody know how he died? Still a young man.

I think he had heart surgery recently so possibly a follow on from that, 59 is no age at all really, should be just settling back and enjoying life.

R.I.P. John Egan. Sympathy to family and friends.

A supreme footballer who thrilled the nation with his pace, handling, and finish.

Best No.15 ever, in my opinion.

Magill magazine (I think), back in the 1980s, held over an edition to the great Dublin football team of the 1970s. It was a brilliant read. That Dublin team used to meet up regularly for social occasions and when the subject come up about the great Kerry team and their wonderful forwards, the name that used to be revered most was John Egan. To illustrate that, the great corner back Gay O'Driscoll used to refer to a point that Egan scored into the Canal End in the famous 1977 semi-final. Egan run onto a ball and as he did so, O'Driscoll sized him up and nailed him with a shoulder. O'Driscoll stated that he knew from the contact that the recipient had to go down. Egan hit the floor alright, but retained possession of the ball, propelled himself up off the ground and swung a point over in a blur of movement. The Dublin players talked about that moment for years after.

To get an idea of his ability, check out his solo goal into the Hill end in the 1979 All Ireland Final.

One of the All Time Greats.

Rest In Peace to 'The Man From Sneem'.

My idol and also a great friend,I've got so many memories of john,I can remember back in the 70s playing football outside the family shop with himself, paddy and gerry.
Many rounds of golf at Parknasilla golf course and many hours spent on the high stool (football was rarely mentioned) the tears are welling up as I think of these times...

    RIP
