Avoiding injury

I've just completed week 3 of the couch 2 5k running plan and i'm super excited with the progress i'm making. Yesterday when i was doing the last 3min run session of the plan, i felt this pain in the anterior part of my shins, the outside/lateral muscley bit. It was particularly bad in my left leg. Now i usually get sore shins as i run and i put it down to "working out" pain and continue on. But yesterday it got particularly bad in my left leg. It kept getting worse till it became this intense burning pain and i felt i had little energy left in my left foot. I finished my run bearing through the pain and once i stopped running the pain and burning quickly went away within 10-15mins of rest.

Now my leg is very slightly sore, about 1/10 in soreness, and its not bad but i'm worried about injuring myself. I dont wanna end up with nasty compartment syndrome needing medical treatment or worse surgery and worst of all i dont want the thought of injuring myself stall the progress i'm making with my running plan. My friend was training for the marathon and ended up getting a stress fracture in his tibia and couldn't run for 4 months. So i really dont want something like that to happen to me.

So should i be worried about this pain in my shins or should i continue on at my normal pace hoping it wont get worse and will go away?

    Thanks!

There is a useful thread here on shin splints and how to avoid/treat them.

But if you think it's more than that, we really can't help. See the charter
We do not give out medical advice. Injuries may have common symptoms but are unique to the individual - just because you were able to keep training with X injury or were out for months because of Y doesn't mean that the same will apply to someone else. Bad advice given here and followed through could aggravate an injury and prevent an athlete making a full recovery in as rapid a time as possible. This restriction is Boards-wide and purposely heavy-handed. So don't feel offended if your thread about a sprained ankle (which you may deem "non-medical") gets locked.
