Right so before I start with the real questions just a little backround
-Just finishing first year, studying Social Science in UCC
-6 years martial arts training/ Fitness fanatic
-plenty of community and volunteer work
-Part time employment for the past year
-490 in the leaving cert including an A1 in Irish

Right, so my question is, how can I better my chances in getting into the Gardai? It's quiet literally the one prospect I've stuck with since 4th year! I decided to do social science because unlike law it teaches you how to help people, which in essence is what I think the Gardai should be about!

I know its not as simple as having a shining CV, but in my mind every advantage is worth it, seen as there as so many applicants!

I've another 2 years to go before I complete my BA ( provided everything goes to plan! ) and my original plan was to try and get into the Gardai after that.

So any suggestions? I've been told to try and join the reserves, but unfortunately just don't have the time between work and college, barely have the time for training, but if there's anything I can do on a more short time frame, let me know!

    Cheers!

I reckon the advice you have gotten indicating you to join the Reserves is probably the best advice you will get. I understand that I don't know your particular circumstances; but do you realize that the reserves only ask for 16 hours a month (2 x 8 hour shifts) of your time. Not only will this give you an invaluable insight into the organisation but will also give you a definite idea of whether the job is for you or not.

Fair enough if you have a full time job, a family or a PSA license etc, but seeing as you're in college, young and want to eventually join the Gardai, you are a perfect candidate and should really have no excuse not to join the Reserves.

At the end of the day, every Tom, Dick and Harry are going to go for a job in the Gardaí during the next few recruitment drives, many will have college degrees etc.

Our training Sgt. for the Reserves told us that having a full driving License, an EDCL course and a swimming cert may be an advantage.

Maybe there are other reasons as to why you dont want to join the reserves besides the excuse of 'time', i dont know....

    Best of luck with it.

Well essentially time is the onluy reasons I'm hesitaant to try and join. Basically my back up is to do an MA in Social Work, for this I need 470 hours volunteer/community hours, so I'm just worried that if I do join, I won't be able to give 100% committment to it. I doubt that would look great in an interview! Then again I didn't know if was only 16 hours a month!Great advise, Cheers!

i think joing the Reserve is the best advice one could give you.

apply now as the process is notoriously lengthy

Did your training Sgt. mention a lifeguard course at all or just simply a swimming cert?
