Apologies if this has previously been asked.

O.k. so i just watched Robot Chickens take on Star Wars , it was pretty stupid but funny it was basically a parody on Star Wars. So it got me thinking, I have never seen Star Wars, I know I know, i basically get shunned by some of my friends when i say that because it's so amazing and blah blah but i don't actually know why it's so amazing. I know literally nothing about Star Wars accept that Darth Vader is bad and Yoda talks funny so i was just wondering what makes it so amazing? Great characters, plot etc?

I was just hoping some of you could convince me to watch it as it seems im missing out!

Also for someone who has never seen any of them whats the best order to watch it in? The way they were released or from the most recent to older, as aren't they released backwards or something?

Sorry if i'm completely oblivious to most Star Wars related stuff haha.

Best order to watch is definitely in order of release.

to be honest my fondness for the films is mainly loving them as a kid and growing up with them so i would be surprised if you took to them the same way as some of us here.

however, If you like science fiction films then you simply have to watch it. There are better films, many in fact but i think it is something that our generation needs to see.

the "first" three films even though they are older then most of the people who post on boards have aged very well.

Basically watch the fist two and if you aren't gagging to see the third then it isn't for you.

Separately, those robot chicken episodes are amazing :)

I'd agree with ziedth, definitely watch them by order of release. So that'd be 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3.

It's hard to say what they're about without giving too much away. Just give them the best chance by watching them alone or with someone else who actually wants to see them. If you like sci fi, I'd be very surprised if you didn't like them.

My advice would be to watch the first 3 original films, if you like sci fi films in any way you will love them. I would also not recommend you watch the 3 new at all, they are tripe. I have watched them a couple of times and tried to give them a chance but they actually got worse the more i watched them.
If you like the originals and want to watch the new ones then by all means but you have been warned!

Admittedly 1 is very weak, 2 improves on it somewhat, but 3 was brilliant.

Brilliant is pushing it somewhat. It was ok. It was better than the other two, which wasn't saying much, at all. But compared to the original trilogy it was bantha poodoo. (see what I did there??)

OP I was just like you only two weeks ago!!
I bought the original trilogy on bluray and loved them. Certainly not the best films ever made but some of the easiest film to watch and enjoy and I would guess I'll be watching them on many a rainy sunday afternoon in the future! Haven't watch 1,2,3 yet but I would definitely watch in order or release.

I suppose it's all relative. To me, 4 was the weakest of the original trilogy & 3 is a better film.

    It's certainly up there anyway.

OP, I wouldn't bother watching them if I was you.

My partner has bugged me for YEARS about watching them. We watched the first one and I just couldn't be ar$ed watching the rest of them.

Nothing drew me in, but maybe I am not the best judge as sci fi is not my thing.

If you haven't watched them you can't be that much of a fan of sci fi. So I dunno how much you'd like them tbh. Also they were of their time, there was a magic to the original in the 70's because there was nothing else like it. Looking at it now, you're years of looking at CGI and special effects. So its not got the same magic or impact.

I think the originals are better simpler and more charming. The newer ones plot is too convoluted. I watched the originals as a kid. Its not the same as an adult I expect.

Still why not watch them. Its a good yarn. Watch in the order they were made I reckon.

I'm not really sure what kind of advice that is  Your advising the OP to never look at them because you didn't enjoy one out of the six of them and arn't a fan of sci-fi? Hmm.

I'd agree with some of this. If your not a fan of sci-fi, you probably won't enjoy the Saga. That's not to say its all about lasers & spaceships, it's not by any means.

I'm not sure I'd agree with them looking worse than CGI. To my eye, some of the model & effects work in Star Wars is as good as it gets, they're kinda timeless in that respect. In fact it's usually CGI that ages badly. Some of the stuff in the film looks better than a lot of things today.

Agreed though re the originals being better, simpler & more charming. The plot of the prequels takes two full films to bear any fruit. But if you've made it to the prequels, I'll assume your already a fan. DO NOT watch them first, not because of any plot spoilers, the saga is simply better watched in production order.

The only reason i would have watched them in chronological order would have been to watch the newer ones 1st and then be able to enjoy the original 3 after rather then watch the good ones 1st then be disappointed by the next 3! I didn't grow up with Star Wars, the original 3 were far before my time, but that's not to say i couldn't enjoy them just as much! It's not like I have avoided watching them I've just never had the opportunity really. The robot chicken episodes just happened to be on and peaked my interest, so after hearing what you all think i may go get them on DVD and see what it's all about!

The originals are the best, but trust me, watching them by order the whole thing seems disjointed & messy. If you wanna give them the best chance possible, watch them in airing order.

Don't worry a bit about the originals being before your time, you'll wish you grew up in the 80's after seeing them ;)

In fairness, thats not what I said.

I meant when we saw it was like nothing else we'd seen before. Thats not true now. At the time it was mind blowing and there was nothing else like it till the sequel.

Ah I see, my bad so, I took you up wrong there :o

I still maintain however, that the modelling & effects work in the original trilogy has stood the test of time far, far better than some CGI work.

Good advice & points by all, nice to see some discussion going on  I'll be interested to see how to OP gets on if he takes the plunge :p

    Hello there
There was a series on BBC Radio 4 titled "I've never seen Star Wars" which was about getting celebrities to try something new. I don't think the programmes are still available on iplayer.
    Here's the link anyway:

The origonal trilogy was something kids grew up with. Before the advent of DVD and on demand it was a traditional xmas airing every kid looked forward too. Today they are old films and we should bear that in mind. When I look at them it's through the eyes of a 10 year in wonder.

BUT, they are still awesome films and although Ep IV is a little slow compared to the others it is still a masterclass in film making. EP V is considered the dark and utterly charming version that fans adore. (my fav.)

The 'new' 3 were a money making exercise. You are stunned with visuals from the moment the film starts until its ends without pause to think or digest. The plot is awful and makes no sense, the acting is dire and the cartoon rabbit is an insult. I threw mine in the bin and have never regretted it. I retain the origonal 3. No main character, no real story and story additions like metaclorians just ruin it.

IF you do decide to watch them and can't work out why they are sooo bad (becasue luca kept you busy (stunned into submission) with the visuals check out red letter media and he will explain it all. PS one of the best film reviews you will EVER watch.

Have to agree the new films are just meaningless visual drivel.
