Sound buttons issue with MacBook Pro

Hey, hope someone can help me out. I've tried Googling the issue but as I seem to be typing in pretty generic terms I'm getting answers for lots of different types of problems.

Basically, there was a time that no matter where the sound was coming from on my MBP, when I pressed the mute button on my keyboard it would stop. If it was iTunes, or Youtube, or an ad or something, the mute button muted all. Now I just have to close a page if it has a loud ad, and I have to change the YouTube setting on the video itself. It's awkward as as a teacher I'd like to be able to be sure my computer is muted.

Anyone know if there's a fix for this? Cheers

When you press the mute button do you get the mute symbol on screen? Does the volume icon in the menubar show no volume?

Also, are the volume buttons working correctly?

I do get that on screen but it doesn't make a different up top on the screen. It seems to come and go a bit. And no, volume buttons come up on screen and all but don't raise or lower the sound. :(
