Im in the process of cleaning up my music in itunes, adding album covers correcting the titles genres ect. I have itunes set to organise my music automatically so the file system is music/artist/album/track

All looks good in itunes but obviously its not writing the artist info to the file, so when i open a track in another programme it will just be the track title. Is there a way for itunes to write the artist to the filename also or do I have to do it manually?

Or any recommendations for id3 tag editor for osx

I think with iTunes, when you change ID3 details of a song in iTunes, instead of saving the changes to the actual MP3 file, it saves them to an iTunes system file. So when you take any of the music out of iTunes and expect all your data to be there it's gone.

I use a program called Tagr for editing my files. And then I import them to iTunes. Bit of a pain but it's the best way i've found of doing it.

No, any ID3 tag changes made in iTunes are saved to the file. If they are old MP3 files you might need to convert the ID3 tags to a newer version. Either that or the changes aren't being saved due to a problem with permissions.

If I understand the OP correctly, though, the ID3 tags aren't the problem. It's the fact that they are opening the files in an app that's not reading the ID3 tags and they want the ID3 data to be reflected in the file name. If so, you will need a separate app to do this.

Are you sure Sad Professor? I just opened iTunes and changed details of a tracks. Then opened the same MP3 in another program me and the changes aren't reflected in the MP3.

I think his problem is that iTunes isn't saving the data to the MP3. Correct me if i'm wrong OP. So when he open's it in another Player none of the ID3 data appears.

They definitely should be. If not, then there's a problem. You may need to convert the ID3 to the latest version. You can do this within iTunes by right-clicking on a track. Or there may be an issue with permissions that is preventing iTunes from saving to the files in question. Like if the files were locked or on an external hard drive. Or the files you are opening aren't the files that are in the iTunes library (i.e. duplicates due to not deleting the originals after importing).

Nope none of the problems you suggested except maybe there not the newest ID3 tags. That could be the reason.
