I am usually pretty bad at explaining these things so hopefully my diagram will help. The red and blue is what I currently have, the yellow and green is what I want to do.

Computers 2 and 3 are on the same desk, have separate monitors but are controlled by the same keyboard and mouse via a KVM switch. Currently only computer 2 is connected to the internet. I want to connect computer 3 to the internet but if possible I want to avoid running a duplicate cable to the router. I also want to be able to transfer files between 2 and 3. Computer 1 is to retain its connection to the internet but to have no connection to 2 or 3.

    All connections are wired.
    Computer 2 is running windows 7 64bit
Computer 3 is running xp 32 bit

So what’s the best way to achieve this, any help would be much appreciated.

if possible I want to avoid running a duplicate cable to the router.

    Replace this

    with this

and you'll have it sorted. It's called a network hub/switch.

Cheapest one at komplett is a Sitecom 5-port switch for €23.

    hi,
what you are looking for is a switch.
just did a quick look on amazon there,
    netgear or TP-Link

if you dont want to run a duplicate cable the you could do whats in the pic.
    picture.php?albumid=1799&pictureid=12441

edit: Torqay beat me to it

I also have a 32bit XP PC and a 64bit Win7 PC. Setting up a wireless network between them is problematic. I got it to work, including printer sharing a few times. What has since happenned it that both PC's can still "see" each other on the network, but the shared folder isn't working correctly.

Anyone have any ideas since I'd related to the OP's question quite closely?

    good guide here
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/
is the printer usb cable connection.
you may need to download a winxp driver to use its full printing modes, capabilitys
you may need to reboot both pcs,for all settings to take effect.
