Hey so, having recently got a new MBP I wanted to install growl as I had on my older one.

Problem is Growl has apparently become a paid for Appstore app, and apparently, the new lion version sucks beyond belief.

Well I'm not inclined to pay for that. But I like the functionality of growl. Is there an alternative ? Will the older version of growl run on Lion ?

Wait for Mountain Lion, which will have notifications. Growl was always a bit crap.

Growl is fine. The older version runs on Lion.

I like Growl. And not sure I will splash for Mountain Lion tbh. Aspects I don't like. As with Lion. But since I got new machine didn't want hassle of putting snow leopard on it. SL is awesomely awesome.

I like the new growl, it has a nice window that will collect and display your notifications while you've been away. Well worth it for that alone.

No need to pay for it. You can checkout the source code from their repo and build it locally. It uses a mercurial repo, you can install mercurial using homebrew,e.g. brew install mercurial

It's €1.79. Hardly going to break the bank to support them.

I don't have an issue with the 1.79. I have an issue with it supposedly sucking according to the intertubes
