Hi everyone. I'm an 18 year old trans male and i've made the decision that i want to start talking to a profession like a psychiatrist or someone of that nature that deals with trans issues this summer. I'm going to be starting college in September and I want to know that if i stay here in Galway are there any good people that i can talk to about my situation. Thanks.

Well there's obviously the Gossip Support group, which had one or two f2m when I was last there.I haven't heard of mental health professionals there though. There might be but I just haven't heard of them. Are you intending to attend NUIG? you could do worse than contact the Counselling department there, they might at least have contacts and perhaps they could support you themselves.

I'm not sure how much help I'd be but if you want an ear,at any point, your welcome to p.m. me. :)

Yes NUIG. That is a good idea. Like you said they might be able to give me some help in that department and if not hopefully some information. I just want to be prepared for next year, and not knowing if there's anyone like that kind of scares me a bit.

    Thank you :D

    Your welcome Lexi.

In addition there's bound to be an lbgt society at NUIG,you should find them with a google search,I'd recommend contacting them too.

I spent one year at NUIG for a postgrad ,wasn't out then though, even to myself.

Thanks but Lexii is my dogs name. My name is Wyatt.

I pretty certain there is. I think a friend of mine joined it this year actually.

A thing like this is tough, especially if you dont realise that your a bit different. I cant imagine how hard it must have been! Only a good friend and my sister know about me. My sister is pretty much still in shock, but i'm lucky that she's really supportive.

Ok Wyatt ,sorry!....I'm happy for you that your sister is supportive, that makes a huge difference. I'm sure many others will be too. True friends and ultimately your family too will want you to be happy. If having your gender reassigned as a man will provide you with a better quality of life then after the shock they probably will support you too.

In choosing a Therapist,it depends to an extent on what you want, whether it's a simple diagnosis for hormonal treatment or Counselling or both. A Counsellor need not be a Gender specialist to be a support, you might well find someone at NUIG can provide this.

I assume you know the usual names who will provide you with a GID diagnosis? Kelly in Dublin,Lucey etc. There's a lady across the road from Limerick train/bus station who I attend and wrote a GID diagnosis. Is she a good support too? fairly but everyone's experience and needs are different. She wouldn't deal with as many trans people as James Kelly but she might be more accesible. Again there might be someone equivilant in Galway,I just don't know off hand.

Dont worry about it :D Well shes really the only family i have. I do have parents but we're not close. Its all i can focus on and how i know that i will be the happiest i will ever be when i start.

I'm pretty much looking for both. Someone that can help me talk through things and who will know when i'm ready to begin my transition.

Well thank you for the help. I'll keep looking into it!
