Can anyone out there tell me why a ICT full time course I recently started does not qualify for BTEA. It's full time for one year to get a level 8 and for some reason I can not get BTEA purely because of its title??
If it were a 3 year full time course starting in septemeber there would be no problem !!!

H.Dip. In Computers are covered for BTEA.
However the courses that are currently being run under the ICT Skills programme are not eligible for BTEA. You stay on Jobseekers payment instead.

    Hi,

I'm thinking of applying for the H.Dip in Software Development in UL, starting this September. Its covered under this ICT Skills initiative so the fees are waived. I am currently working in the UK but would give up my job and move home if I got accepted into the course.

My question is as follows. Would I be eligible to apply for Jobseekers Allowance while completing this course? I know that those people already claiming JSA are entitled to keep this allowance.

    Any advice/help greatly appreciated!

    From the Bluebrick website:
Participation in the programmes will not create an entitlement to receive any income support payment, a student grant or the Back to Education Allowance.

If you are unemployed with an entitlement to a Jobseekers allowance or Jobseekers benefit payment from the Department of Social Protection you may retain such payments, if you have been on the Live Register for at least 3 months in the 6 months prior to the commencement of the programme. If you are in receipt of a Jobseekers payment you must contact your local social welfare office to make an application to retain your payment under an atypical pilot basis of the Part Time Education Option (PTEO). This will necessitate the completion of a special PTEO form entitled ‘PTEO – ICT Skills Programme 2012’. Under the PTEO you may only retain such payments for the duration of time that an underlying entitlement to a payment exists. You can download the PTEO (Part-Time Education Option) form here.

    Thanks cee-jay!

Reading between the lines, that pretty much seems that I can't apply for JSA so? Seems to suggest that only those already in receipt of JSA can continue to receive it but not new applicants, yes?

    Thanks again.

I think the approved courses are the same for the BTEA and student grant system

You can find approved institutions on this list

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    Hi cee_jay,

Would you happen to know if I would be eligible for the BTEA; the course I have been accepted into is the following:

Course Link - Msc Computer Science (Conversion) UCD
The 90 credits of Semesters 1 and 2 are core credits. 70 of the 90 credits are at Level 4, and 20 at Level 3. Students must obtain more than a 50% average in order to continue in the MSc stream in Semester 3. Thus, students may exit at this point with either a Graduate Certificate (30 ECTS) or a Higher Diploma (60 ECTS), provided they have obtained the appropriate number of credits.

So I could leave the course with a higher diploma... Or would I be done over due to a technicality? (i.e The course title is a MSc)

The other issue I have is that I think my undergraduate degree would be classified as level 8 (honours bachelers degree) and I am fairly sure that the higher diploma I listed above is also classified as level 8 - Would that make me ineligible? Would it be best to complete the application form, fill in the details of my undergraduate course, but don't list what level it was at and hope I wont run into an issue?

    Any advice would be appreciated...
