Are there any? I've heard a lot of criticisms of PayPal lately, what are the biggest reasons for this? I read the FAQ, it says I cannot register my Lazer, but surely that's not too troublesome? Is PayPal the best site to use if someone is paying me over the web, or are there alternatives?

If you want to sell or buy on ebay then there are no alternatives.

Otherwise you can try Moneybookers which is fab and you can use your laser card with it. Good few sites take it and people with a moneybookers account can take payments from others who want to pay them with laser/credit card.
Depends what you want to do really!
I have been using paypal for over 10 years and the only fault I can find with it personally is the fees.

If you're using paypal for safety reasons , i'd say just get an o2 money card , thats what I use for online purchases

I'd go with moneybookers. They've an excellent reputation for use if you're a buyer and even better if you're a seller.

I've had issues with both services before (as both buyer and seller). Paypal take forever to respond, when they do it's usually a "robotic" response that had nothing to do with what you asked or in no way resolves your question/request.

I had an issue with a seller recently (EA Games - shudder :s), i won't go into that, but basically moneybookers answered my email correctly within minutes, and resolved my issue there and them, all in one email :-)

Hmm I'll look into moneybookers thanks. I'm mostly looking at getting one or the other for payment for freelance work, would moneybookers be good for that?

Yep they should be good for that.

As with all payment processors though, you will have to keep in mind that until the money is in your own bank account it's technically the payment processors money.

If something horrible happens and the processor closes down or closes your account say goodbye to your money. I hear this is a parcicular problem with Paypal who apparently close accounts regularly for the vaguest of reasons.

Several site about them http://www.paypalsucks.com/ and www.aboutpaypal.org
