Computer Upgrade Help

Hi All
I have the following on my computer build.

* 8GB GeIL DDR3 Value Plus CL9 Dual Channel
* AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Box, Sockel AM3
* Corsair VX450W 450 Watt
* Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P, AMD 770
* Sapphire HD 4350 1GB DDR2 PCI-Express

My Computer is over 2 years old and the CPU seems to be under pressure as of late. I use Photoshop CS5 & Vegas Pro.

If I replace the processor will I have to replace the motherboard ?
No real budget in mind, just wondering if its more cost effective to upgrade the items or go for a new build ?

Your biggest problem is that you are using multithreaded programs on a dual core CPU. The budget option would be to get an FX-6100 to replace the X2. If you have the money however, you'd be better off getting an i7-2600k + Z68 motherboard.

whats your budget for upgrade? maybe its possible to get new mobo and cpu from intel?

for Photoshop CS5 & Vegas Pro simply upgrading the processor should be more than adequate for your needs

Yeah but they can work in some AM3 mobos with a BIOS update. I just checked and the op's one doesn't support it though.

Yeah I don't mind spending the money on the higher spec. I guess I better off going for something that will do me for a few years before upgrading again (will prolly be out of date in 3 months ). I wonder if I will try and install myself

I could spend up to €400-€500
But If I can something cheaper and as good.

OK after pricing around to get the job done (€100 +). I'm gonna try and replace it my self.

I'm prolly gonna go for this one AMD Bulldozer FX-6100. It seems the new CPU and existing mobo are compatible.

all you need. it will kill anything you will throw at it. with 1 press of a button you can OC it to 4.2Ghz
i added SSD too for your boot drive and programs you work with.

Are you sure it wil work? It's am3+ socket and you got am3. I am not sure, but your mobo won't work with that CPU?

I'd say go for the 960T. Cheaper, definitely supported, possibly better in general and may unlock to 6 cores (which would be better than bulldozer's sort-of-6-cores).

You say that bulldozer has "sort of 6 cores" ?

Bulldozer's 'cores' are not separate cores as they were in previous processors. Each pair of cores are grouped into 'modules' which share a lot of resources. In the CPU above, you're getting just 3 cores with some doubling up - you're certainly getting more than Intel's hyperthreading but it's still not quite 6 cores either.

Hey Monotype

I just noticed the one you linked was the 965.

Do you still recommend the 960T €148 ( quad-core design is based on the Thuban hexa-core design with two cores disabled.)
over the 965 €106 (native quad-core die design with no disabled cores.)

For the noob like me. Is it better to get the 965 and not have to worry about trying to unlock the cores in the BIOS for the 960T

Sorry about that. You're right. The 960T isn't actually stocked by amazon themselves. The 965 is still a pretty good deal.

Looking around, I can't really find the 960t anywhere, at least without paying through the nose for shipping.
I suppose an alternative is the 1045T.

Guaranteed six cores and delivered from amazon for £100 (+ ~2% Irish VAT or whatever). Should be able to get a bit of overclock out of it too, although maybe not as much as some of the other X6s. Still, not bad for the price if you can make use of the cores.
