Powerchex Background Check

    Hi,

I have been offered a job recently and I am required to undergo a background check, which I thought was fair enough. Then I got the form from a company called Hirerite and their Powerchex product.

The form asks for copies of a few pages at the front of my passport. It asks for PPS number, everywhere I have lived for the last six years, all my employers, credit history etc.

I am worried about the level of detail they want. I am not usually uber privacy concious, but this seemed excessive. Is it? I had a look at their site and couldn't find any details of who will be given my details and what particularly they will revel to various references.

They also ask for references for people that can confirm information about me.
I can see the logic of calling previous employers and College, although my college has previously and rightly refused to give my private information to a third party (I enclosed my transcript) that should do.

They are asking for references that can confirm gaps in employment and stuff. What I am worried about is them asking references about private information I gave in the forms e.g. medical absence from college exams one year which is indicated on my transcript, I don't want them to ask people about that.

I also doubt some of my employers remember me, job in a shop 5 years ago. I don't even think the manager is still there.

Has anyone had Powerchex do a check on them before? How invasive is it really?

    My current company did it.
Essentially they called my last 2 references, I gave them a list of countries I'd been to in the last 5 years, college transcript (they did call the college but were told to PFO)

I'm currently going through this process too. They are a disaster and a bit excessive alright.

Giving them phone numbers for past employers you haven't seen in years is a pain. They also claimed to have contacted my current employer when I know for a fact they didn't. They also said they failed to confirm my attendance in my university so I had to send them scans of all 4 years of my exam results. They are basically useless.

They say the whole process takes 2 weeks to complete, but I reckon that's only if you do all the work for them. Lazy hounds
