You can check what RAM and max RAM either from crucial.com or the app Mactracker.

For your model(assuming its the 15inch MBP 2.4ghz core i5 Mid 2010) it would be 8gb max, see http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=MacBook%20Pro%202.4GHz%20Intel%20Core%20i5%20(15-inch%20DDR3)%20MC371LL%2FA&Cat=RAM

From Crucial direct it would be about £35 delivered for the UK

As usual model numbers or part-numbers are always useful in giving definitive suggestions.

About this Mac should show "MacBookPro6,2" if it's the model suggested above. Alternatively, a label on the product should show "A1286" as the model number or MC371LL/A which confusingly is referred to as the marketing number.

The 8 gb kit above is spot on if the model etc. matches yours, 8 gb max.

All the models of Macbook Pros from 2009 and 2010 used DDR3 8500 and were all limited to 8GB anyway.
2011 models could take 16GB and used PC 10600 RAM.

I guessed his is the MC371LL/A as I thinks its the only model with a 2.4ghz Core i5, but your right it would be easier if more details were posted
