Looking to replace the plugs in the Avensis. Micksgarage is listing two versions of the 4A-FE engine, one with 101hp and the other with 110hp. It's a 2000 Aura model. I've asked the google machine but it's coming up short... How do I know which engine it is?!

    Vvt-i and the older type

If yours is the non vvti get ones for a 99, if it's vvti get 01

    Actually that's wrong.

The ones they have for both pre mid 00 100 and 109 are the same plug anyway.

Is yours the 97-00 non vvti?

    Yup, it's the pre-update non-VVTI model. Thanks!

    NGK BKR6EP-13
It is the same plug for all the 4A-FE and 3ZZ-FE engines.

Ok so I swapped out the plugs for the NGK models mentioned above. The old plugs were quite clean around the insulators with some light discolouring. The reason I wanted to change them was that it seems to take 5-7 turns of the engine for it to take hold. That issue is still present. If it makes a difference: the idle speed starting from cold is about 1200-1400rpm and settles to about 750 when warmed up. It seems to drive well but when I release the throttle it seems to respond slowly.

I've read somewhere about dirty throttle bodies and idle control valves, maybe this is the issue? Is this normal behaviour for this engine?
