A friend at work is helping to organise a fundraiser for the Bridgecomplex in Sixmilebridge on Saturday 2nd June

They are having a 100km cycle - Cycle of the Lakes taking in some of the lake scenery around Clare. From the map I have seen (I think this is the route, although it is subject to change...http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1057189) It appears to be an easily acheivable 100km with no major climbs, so might be an ideal one for newbies looking to crack 100km for the first time :D.

10am start and sign-on either the day before or on the morning of the event. 20 euro and there is a BBQ afterwards. You can also get entry forms from bridgecomplex@eircom.net

And while it's not a race, apparently a King and Queen of the Lakes Jersey will be awarded

So i did this today...not the best day for it! I think about 30min into it it started to rain :( It was drizzle for a while but eventually got heavier. Glad i made the decision to wear the jacket and long pants. The jacket seemed to do a good job of keeping me dry...was just a bit sweaty:eek:

Organisation was excellent and the route was really well signposted along the way as well as marshalls at all the major junctions. I was at the back right from the start and the broom wagon stuck with me the whole time. At times i was riding with another girl however i was basically by myself for the entire time. The stop at Peppers Pub near Feakle at the 55km mark was very welcome and a nice respite from the rain, although it got heavier again when we left :( tea and coffee plus brack, cake etc was put on, however i had my own vegemite roll and chocolate brownie :p continued on then for the next 20km with the other girl always in my sights and occasionally passing her. At the 75km mark i'd just had enough :( The rain was coming down quite heavy at that point and i found it hard to see through my glasses (really need to look at getting contacts for (cycling) . So i stopped and took a welcome ride in the broom wagon. We followed the last rider for the next hour or so and about 5km from home i was kicked out and myself, the lady we were following and another lady we caught up to rode into Sixmilebridge together.

So excluding the last 5km as i didn't turn runkeeper back on, i did 75km in 3hr 42min, avg speed 20.21km/hr, elevation 675m.

It was a nice route even though a few of the roads weren't in the best shape (however this is Clare and Clare is not exactly known for its great roads!) i think about 65 people in total did it, with either 6 or 7 girls taking part. There was a nice free bbq at the end as well :)

So i'm dissapointed i didn't clock up my first 100km cycle bit that's life. Maybe if the weather had been better or if i'd had another stop somewhere (although anywhere i stopped would have been in the rain) i would have made it, but there's always next time.

well done for even going out in that rain in the first place! Miserable day for it. And yeah the roads aren't the best in Clare, didn't realise how bad they were til I swopped my hybrid for a road bike - sometimes feels like my brains vibrating!!

Well done to all involved. Participants were brilliant and as usual would not have been possible without a great team of volunteers. Looking forward to next year already

Was out with a friend that moring and saw the signage, a miserable day to be on the bike. I guarantee you that that 75 K was worth over a hundred on a better day. Don't worry about the speed the fact you did that distance and time on the bike on such a misserable day was in it's self an great effort.
