So, what's on your top 10 list for the Sega Mega CD?
It can be the best games or just guilty pleasures you enjoy :)

Snatcher CD is my #1 without a doubt. Sci-fi dystopian game heavily influenced by Blade Runner/Terminator. It's mostly text based, but there are segmented shooting sections. The story is the big seller though, kinda like an interactive anime.

Yeah, Snatcher is at the top or near the top of my list.

I agree. But the PC Engine version is the best. Check the fan site for detailed platform comparisons.

    Here's my copy. :)

This is good also. PlayStation version is the best (or joint best with the PC-9801 original if you prefer the score on that version).

    Final Fight is up there.

Wonderdog is good, Wolfchild is better. Terminator 2 is ok.

Sewer Shark is a turkey, but was good for its day. Let's not even mention Night Trap.

Snatcher definitely. Excellent graphic novel from Kojima and a stellar localisation from Jermey Blaustein. The extra final chapter might be a bit duff, going on longer than a MGS4 cutscene but otherwise pure class.

Robo Aleste. A sequel to the awesome Musha this game isn't quite as good but still one of the finest games ever made.

Koei Flying Squadron. Awesome shooter in the parodius vein.

Sonic CD. The fanboys love it, I think it's the worst of the 16 bit Sonics but still well worth a play.

Popful Mail. Excellent little platformer mixed with RPG and metroid. Working Designs made it a bit tougher for the western release meaning bosses take an annoying amount of punishment but don't let that put you off an amazing game.

Lunar 1 and 2: Superb RPGs.

Batman Returns. Turn off the crappy platform sections and enjoy the racing bits.

Soulstar. Excellent Starfox clone with some gorgeous scaling effects.

Shining Force CD. Who doesn't love shinign force! this has 3 games in one.

Night Trap: Grab some mates and some beer, sit back. Laugh your ass off.

What version of the Mega CD works with my modded Asian Mega Drive? Dennin Aleste is a game I am certainly after. Is the Mega CD 1 better? I forget which one it is now, but one version is seriously unreliable. I'm assuming it's the first?

Oh and I should have corrected my earlier post, Snatcher made its debut on the PC-8801, not the 9801. Policenauts made its debut on the PC-9821. Anyway, just sayin'. :)

Not sure about reliability but the mega cd 1 looks a million times better than the mega cd 2 abomination. I do prefer my multi mega but I'm on the look out for a mint condition mega cd 1 as well, and a second multi mega for modding.

The one thing I tell people to remember when they're picking between the MCD1 and MCD2 is that the first console has a motor to open the CD drive.

If that fails, you're kind of knackared.

The MegaCD 2 on the other hand just has a flip up lid.

So it's one less part to fail.

Aesthetically, it depends what console you're using it with. The Mega CD 1 with the Megadrive 1 and the Mega CD 2 with the Megadrive 2. Anything else just looks wrong!

Edit - nice excuse to post that pic of my Mega CD 2 set up with a Megadrive 2 and the hard to find Master System converter 2 and Megamouse 2. Red button heaven :)

Ecco and Earthworm Jim are both worthwhile ports to the MegaCD.
Road Rash on it is so bad it has to be tried, not worth buying though.
Rebel Assault II is there as well, once you know what you are getting it's fun and a must have for Star Wars nerds fans.

Isn't it in Japanese though, for such a text dependant & text heavy game, it's not really playable if you don't understand Japanese. I could be wrong, but I think the Mega CD is the only English language version of it.

Same with Policenauts, the spiritual successor. Except this is even worse as it never got an English language release. It has been fan translated & patched on the PS1 though.

Your modded Megadrive will be compatible with any Mega CD  The NTSC Mega CD's check the display hertz of the attached Megadrive, so you can set yours to 60Hz & your sorted.

Prometheus looks amazing.. it had me when the trailer had the loud BBRRRROOOOMM noise every 2 seconds..

I went to the new Odeon cinema last week to see a movie in screen 1 as a test run for Prometheus.
The sound system they have is pretty dark sweet. They do need to improve a few things but they're only open a week or two so hopefully they will get things better over time.

    12.5Mhz baby!

Shame there aren't any pictures of the millions of switches on the side.

I will leave you with this instead.

Pity theres no Death and Return of Superman to go into any of those consoles haha.

Been wanting to get a MD overclocked myself, thought you had problems with yours?

This thread has me wanting to get my M-CD collection up to scratch aswell, not that many, only a few essentials I'd be getting

Theres a lot of US and JAP only games for the console though, and heaps of ****e games

The overclock works now, but I dont use it that much for fear of burning out that sound chip again. Not sure if it's just a console revision issue or what.

My own Mega CD collection is pitiful. Only have 3-4 games. Would love to buy Snatcher, I still haven't played through that one yet!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,790 ✭✭✭Jack burton

Yeah thats a real "backup" one, I would like to have the original but just something about the fragility of CD's that I cant really justify spending huge money on them. Gota love those tiny pcbs in plastics cases I pay loads for though

At the beginning I planned to have all four switches at the side. But I found that the clock signal degraded badly, as the wire to the cpu to the switch location was too long. I had to reroute the clock switch to the back then as it's right beside the cpu then.

After a while the sound chip failed in the Megadrive, no idea if it was related to the overclock mod, but I replaced the chip & it worked again.
