My sister lives in a rural part of the midlands, she gets her TV from Cairn Hill and last Christmas I setup her Aldi Saorview STB so she's all set for the switchover with no frequency change to worry about in October though some of her neighbours will be affected when Mount Leinster changes and will need to do a rescan.

She just sent me this e-mail...

I'm all confused re this SAORVIEW. I'm on a committee connected with community forum, which I chair in XXX (town), to inform older people re what's necessary in order to go digital.

I picked up a leaflet in dry cleaners this morn. re SAORVIEW. A crowd called <DELETED> will put in box. I rang and it'll cost E195 with box, guarantee, VAT etc.

I asked what I 'd get for that. He said I'd get the box and a new digital RTE aerial outside, as old aerial wouldn't be suitable.

I said - made up story - my neighbour got her brother to install the box and put in the new cables and my neighbour didn't need a new aerial, giving the senario here where you put in new box for me.

He said that neighbour would have problems in Oct. with that aerial when new service comes in.

Clealry this guy is a cowboy because anybody currently receiving the four Irish channels from Cairn Hill will not need a new aerial from October and if they have Saorview setup today, they won't need to rescan at ASO.

Some people in the area with only RTE1 and RTE2 (Mount Leinster) clearly will need a new (UHF) aerial but this guy is claiming that everyone in the area needs a 'digital' aerial and won't even accept that someone picking up Saorview today will be able to receive it after ASO.

Is she one The Wheel's Digital Outreach "champions" or associated with the Outreach Programme?

If so this information should be passed to the Dept of Communications who are responsible for coordinating the switchoff.

Again we might discuss the issue generally and refrain from specifics.

Came across this article in the Leinster Express
    Mountmellick elderly fearful of callers

    Published on Friday 13 April 2012 16:44

    ...

Sheelagh Coyle from the Community Forum highlighted the latest scam by bogus callers, who are overcharging to install RTE’s digital service.

“People are being charged a huge amount of money for the Saorview box. It only costs €60 but they are paying €120 and up. It’s only a matter of unplugging one cable and plugging in another. We need to alert elderly people. It is mostly them as they don’t have new televisions,” she said.
