Where do people stand on retouching non-commercial portraits, such as a bride, or a friends portrait?

Do it, don't do it, do it without telling them?

as with a lot of things, it depends.
i doubt someone would object to touching out a spot which is temporary; they might object to you removing a mole which is not.

I usually ask before I do anything. Often women will say something along the lines of 'feel free to photoshop the hell out of me'

Personally I don't manipulate the image (as its not allowed with work), but its really horses for courses really..... no-body likes their blemishes visible for all to see but some people are defined by their quirkes.

if someone asks to do it...no prob, if they dont ... then dont simply because what might look like a spot to you might be a beauty mark to them and if its removed they might ask why, but if they want something removed I'm sure they will let you know.

Depends on context, if its a group shot then no but if its a close up shot of the bride then yes. most times (see all the time) they dont even notice which is a good sign for me :)

Interesting thoughts, I suppose I wouldn't think twice about removing a stray hair or a spot, or reducing a bit of shine on someone's face.

Was really just curious as to what everyone else does.
