Strong wind from the North. I live close enough to the airport and it isnt used too often..maybe once or twice a year.

Most surprising thing about this video is an electronic device being used during take off

Isn't it used sometimes in the morning rush hour for take offs?

I'd love to experience an approach & landing on it. It was the main runway before 10/28 was built. We lived under the flight path and it gave me my love of aviation.

Excellent video. One thing i don't get,why keep pointing the camera into the cabin every couple of minutes? There's nothing of any interest going on?!!

The airfield is where it's at.:)

Spot on. Winds permitting, it is used from around 6am with runway 28 for departing traffic in order to reduce taxi times because of the amount of departing flights at that time.

It's not unheard of. I landed RWY 34 coming home from Lanzarote on a Monarch 752 a couple of years ago..

I was very surprised to see the 767 takeoff on that runway!

I should add that it went and taxied down Runway 10 before it took off from Runway 34 (as seen in video), I thought it peculiar...

It's used almost every morning for dual take-offs.
It's also used late at night when 28/10 is getting maintenance or inspections.
It's used way more than a couple of times a year. I would guess last year it was used about 30+ days in 2011.

Small correction, it wasn't the main runway before 28/10 was operational, runway 24/06 was. It certainly got more use back then though.

Ah those were the days !

If it's a phone, just set it on Aircraft Mode to block Tx/Rx of wireless signals and you can still use the camera.

Unless it's got a film and a manual winder for advancing the film it's deemed an electronic device and should be switched off for takeoff and landing.

Indeed when it concerns phones, any airline that allows use of a device with flight mode usually specifically says during the pre-departure briefing to passengers that just activating flight mode is insufficient and that the device must be powered off for take off and landing.

And no flash, seeing as they're powered by normal batteries.

On the above BMI flight the FAs seemed more concerned about a guy in the emergency exit row as they asked him twice to take out his earphones.

As you can see in the video I was just behind J class and had an (extremely!) generous amount of legroom so I deem it unlikely that the FAs didn't see me recording...

A controller told me before that they tried to work with both 28 and 34 (same time) in the mornings but it didn't work out too well as Manchester CTRL were unable to accept the vast amount of flights...

Unless of course the airline staff tell you that all portable electronic devices must be powered off for take-off and landing

In that case you have just broken the terms and conditions of carriage. You did tick that box didn't you?

Just found some material dating back to 1989, when aer rianta were promoting 10/28 before it opened. It makes several references to rwy 17/35, so was 16/34 ever 17/35 at any point, I am not aware, but do know there were other runways no longer there? 06/24 and 12/30 ( which I don't know where this one was, may have just been a grass rwy)

The headings were all changed by 1 at some point due to magnetic drift

    16/34 was 17/35
11/29 (the small runway to the north, recently closed) was 12/30
05/23 - which was the other runway that formed an X shape with 16/34) was 06/24

None were grass, for a very short period after 10/28 opened all 4 were available for use and then 05/23 was taken out of use; it has since been built over in parts.

U'd think I would cope 11/29 = 12/30 also ! Doh! They must have changed around the late 80's or early 90's as this leaflet was promoting 10/28 and new atc, roads etc. Thanks for info, didn't know the had all changed 1 degree. There where grass runways, but back in the 40's, when dub began.

34 has been in use in the past couple of days for morning departures. However I heard ATC mention that it was only available until 8am.
