Massive sound issues - Win7 install corrupt?

Bizarre one this, and from what I've heard by no means a unique problem :/ A known-good headset works fine on my laptop, but in Win7 it only works properly in Windows itself; every app seems to have its own issue.

Generally, the issues can be broken into two categories: either the sound is badly garbled with missing sounds or the sound is perfect but INCREDIBLY quiet, even with the app and Windows volume sliders maxed!

At the same time, the headset is fine, and Windows seems fine too, so it doesn't seem to be hardware. This is on a near-pristine Win7 install patched to SP1 and with the most recent Realtek audio drivers installed, albeit one with serious issues installing a/v packages o_O

You'll probably need to break it down Solitaire... What apps is it working in, and which ones not?... Are they all using the same driver? Do you only have one onboard soundcard?

    Along with Jonathon's qns...
Is this a USB connected headset or a 3.5mm audio jack connected to the sound card?

Might as well check that the default settings are set...
On Microsoft defaults, If you right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar, choose Playback Devices, there is a dialog with 4 tabs.

Is output to the default microsoft speakers "high definition audio device"?

Under Communications tab, is it set to 'do nothing'?
Under Playback Tab, speakers, configure, is it set to stereo?
Under Playback Tab, speakers, properties, Enhancements, are they all disabled?
Under Playback Tab, speakers, properties, Advanced, is it set to 16bit, 44.1khz? "Allow apps to take exclusive control" and "give exclusive mode apps priority" should be checked and enabled.
