IR Blaster + UPC Digital

    Hi folks,

First time posting in this forum and I've been away from Windows MCE builds in particular since Windows Media Center 2005...

I recently built a new Windows 7 Home Premium system and have an AVerTV CaptureHD H727 tuner card in there (mainly for the HDMI input on it). So I figured I would try to use MCE again, since the UPC box guide is absolutely horrific. First problem here... I can't set up UPC Digital without a remote/IR receiver, which I don't have (the one the tuner doesn't seem to be detected by MCE).

So ok, I saw the threads here about some cheap and cheerful remotes but none of them seem to have IR Blasters any more, like my trusty old eHome MCE 2005 set. Even if I get one with IR Blasters, do they even work with UPC Digital any longer? This thread has me concerned:

Assuming they do work, any recommendations for Windows 7? If IR Blasters don't work, I guess I can just get a cheapo remote to at least get the guide set up properly and change channels manually (full MCE control would be nice but not essential).

    Thanks in advance.

    Check out this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=71602666

I think you may be confusing IR Blasters with IR Receivers? Blasters transmit an IR signal e.g. from your HTPC to your STB to change channel. Whereas Receivers receive an IR signal e.g. from a remote.

As you say, you could use your UPC remote to manually change the UPC channels, but then WMC won't follow the changes & you can't set-up any automated recordings on your HTPC unless you have the channel pre-selected

That Tuner Card looks the business, I was looking for something similar a few years ago. Though I think there were mentions of issues with the DRM/Copyright control from the HDMI out from an STB ?

I gave-up on UPC on my HTPC and went with Saorview & Freesat instead. Saving quite a few € every month too......:p

Thanks for the reply. I know exactly what a blaster vs a receiver is - not sure why you think I have them confused from my post?

My question was more to do with if blasters still work with UPC Digital but it seems they do not unfortunately :(. So I probably should get just a receiver/remote then - there would be no point in getting a blaster capable kit, which is usually more expensive. I mostly want to just watch TV in MCE and get their guide data, so it's not too big a deal that I would have to change channels manually and not be able to record (though thanks a lot UPC for screwing that all up!).

The H727 is very good - I'm feeding an Xbox360 into the HDMI and I can't fault it. STBs or other devices (like the PS3) that have HDCP enabled on the HDMI output won't work though, unless you use something like an HDFury to get around that.
