Leeson Street Pedestrian Lights

These lights at Leeson Street Bridge need to be addressed by Dublin City Council. They are inconsistent to say the least and there is no good reason why they operate the way they do. They are supposed to help people cross the road and not hinder them. In this case for some crazy reason, the lights don't change. But that's actually normal for these lights to be awkward. It is a 5 lane road and crossing this everyday without the help of the lights is madness.

The lights obviously have a technical problem.

    And it's Leeson, not Lesson.

Really, the Barge ones are not working now.... Basically negates the Grand Canal Cycle Lane.

I thought they were disabled, the pedestrian lights at least.

I got a reply from Dublin City Council,

"Thank you for bringing this fault to our attention. Dublin City Council's ITS Section had been aware of the fault and were working on a solution. The ITS Officer reports that this fix has now been implemented and the signals are working correctly."

But it doesn't say what the fault was or how long it was a fault for. These lights have been operating inconsistently for a quite some time.

Better keep an eye on it.

Besides timing, some of the lights along the canal seem to have other faults too.

For example, this morning at the crossing Charlemont Street / Place / Mall, the ped lights cycled without the bike lights coming on at all, and then the bicycle lights seem to cycle rapidity and then turned green.

As you've showed on YouTube, I've also once seen were the pedestrians have been left without a cycle at all.

There is something odd about these lights and their method of operation. I can understand that there are sensors in the ground on the run up to the cycle lights. But not sure why the pedestrian lights are like that. Perhaps it is only push button activted.

It always makes me wonder just how / should these lights function given where they are. They would have high demands and low demands, so would have to have a flexible operation.

The push button idea works when there is not many pedestrians using the crossing and so they operate when required. But when it is a busy crossing, I have noticed that pedestrians don't push the button because they presume someone else has. But you do see that someone comes up and makes their way amongst everyone standing there to find the button and see the little light is not on and then pushes the button. Busy lights need to be different. They need to be automatic.

So you probably know that for years gone past there was no lights and it was a busy crossing then too. Pedestrians were "directed" to the Adelaide Road crossing point, but not many used that. And there was no crossing on the Mespil Road side. So it was about time a clear path was given. But let's be honest, how many traffic lights are here now. I suspect the way of getting over that problem of too many lights is to bump the pedestrian lights to the back of the preference order.

Sorry, and in particular to what you are saying, I have seen the cycle lights go green and then to red in about 2 to 3 seconds.

Yes, there is something counter intuitive going on here.
