    Hi All

I am hoping to go over to Germany to see some of it's famous castles. I will mostly be aiming for those built by King Ludwig II or where he spent some time.

I however am totally unfamiliar with the country and language so any advice or info would be appreciated!

So you're basically looking for advice about Germany and German?

Do some research first yourself on his castles (mostly in Bavaria if I remember correctly) and then come back with specific questions. Bit pointless asking what you've asked.

Not Germany generally as I will probably just stick to seeing castles as it is a quick visit.

Most of them that I can see are in Bavaria but I am not sure if I should base myself in one place like Munich and travel out daily or stay out beside the more famous ones such as Neuschwanstein.

I am a bit worried about staying outside urban areas in case my lack of German would be a problem but I don't want to spend loads of time travelling either.

I was a bit vague just in case there were some less famous ones that may be worth a visit in between the Ludwig ones.

Again hope that clear it up and any advice would be great!

    Hallo Vinchik,

firstly you have good taste in castles.

    Schloss Neuschwanstein
This castle is 5 km from Füssen. Füssen is about 2.5 hours by rail from Munich
central station. There are bus tours from Munich directly to this
    castle.
By road one arrives wth the B17 Bundestrasse (national primary road).
Last December we were in the ticket office at 1300 hours. It was
announced that the tours for the rest of the day had been sold out.

    Schloss Linderhof
It is near Oberammergau and Ettal.
It is about 2 hours by rail from Munich central station to Oberammergau.

By road one arrives with the A95 Autobahn from Munich.
I have no information about bus connections from Munich to Linderhof
    and from Oberammergau to Linderhof.

One can drive from Neuschwanstein to Linderhof via Reutte in Austria. This
    trip is 46 km.

Alternatively one could base oneself in Peiting area:
    Day1: Neuschwanstein via B17 road.
    Day2: Linderhof via B23 road.
If enough time you could take in:
    - Kloster (Friary) Ettal this is well signposted on B23 road
    on your way to Linderhof.
    - Wieskirche, Steingaden a Church in Rococo style 6km off the B17 road.
    - Schloss Hohenschwangau. This castle is adjacent to Neuschwanstein.
Ludwig spent part of his youth there.

    Schloss Herrenchiemsee
This is by the town of Prien. Train from Munich in 70 Minutes.
From Prien, steam train to the jetty, a ferry to the island, 20 minute
walk to the ticket desk at the palace.
Prien is east of Munich, reached by road from the A8 Autobahn.
It's about 170 km from Prien to Neuschwanstein on Bundesstrasse.

You asked about staying outside of Munich. Generally people
outside of Munich speak english just as well as those in Munich.

    Lesser known castle
Schloss Possenhofen is on Starnberger See near Pöcking. It
is not open to the public. Access: S6 S-Bahn, A95 Autobahn.

Looks like John C gave you a good comprehensive load of info there, but do not worry about not speaking German most people speak very good English, even the kids. I lived in Munich for a year great place, easy to get around with the U-Bahn and trams.

Many Palaces, Castles, Fortresses and Residences in Bavaria
are owned by the State of Bavaria.

Here is a link to a website in English.
    http://www.schloesser.bayern.de/englisch/palace/index.htm

Nymphenburg Palace and its park are located in suburban Munich.
Ludwig the second was born there.
Munich also has a Residence with a museum.

Just outside Munich is Schleißheim Palace. It can be reached by Public
Transport. My buddy and I cycled there.

Aer Lingus fly to Munich from Dublin and Cork.
    Depart Dublin 07:20 hours Days 1 3 567. Day 1 is Monday.
    Depart Dublin 16:20 hours Days 12345 7
    Depart Cork 10:50H Days 2 4 6 .

Lufthansa fly from Dublin only on Saturdays at 17:25 hours.

At Munich Airport Aer Lingus planes park directly at the terminal.
Pax exit with air bridges. It is near 85354 Freising. It has
no main line rail. It has two rapid rail lines, S1 and S8. Both lines
serve the Innenstadt (downtown area), central station and
Marienplatz und Rathaus (Marian Square with City Hall).

    Gruesse Hans C
