Down sides to itunes library on external disk?

I'm looking to re-assign my two macbooks. One is going to be my general work and leisure machine and the other is going to be strictly for DJing. Because my itunes library is getting quite large now, I want to keep it separate from my boot disk. I have a firewire drive so am going to copy over and delete my media folder.
As each macbook has it's own library (they are not completely synchronized) I'm not sure if I can make one master external drive and just plug it into whichever one I want to listen to itunes on. It seems possible as I only have to redirect itunes to the new address for the media.
Also, by having my media on an external drive does that mean that i will have any problems re syncing my ipod.?
Anybody here have itunes media on an external drive?

    Yep I do.

If you want the same library on to different computers via the drive, then when you delete the libraries on both computers, plug in the Hard drive and open iTunes for the first time, it will say 'The folder containing iTunes Library cannot be found'

After clicking OK on this message, it will allow you to locate the library. Simply direct iTunes to the new Library, and click OK. This message won't appear again once your drive is plugged in when you open iTunes
