Advice please - Sat Nav app to use driving in the States

I'm looking for an app, preferably free, to use when driving in Florida in a couple of months. I'm recommending it for a friend instead of buying or renting a sat nav, so I'd like to be sure it's Ok before they arrive and find it's useless.
They'll be using their own phone, so something that doesn't use data as it's working is a must.
I can do a google, but just wondering if anyone had any experience of using anything and how did it work.
    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks

Best free seems to be this one right now:

    NavFree USA

Not free and there are four or five that seem to get great reviews, particularly these two:

    CoPilot Live USA

    Navigon USA

If they're there for that long, might be worthwhile looking into getting a local SIM?

OsmAnd / OsmAnd+ and offline data. You can check the quality of the map on openstreetmap as it's the same map that you'll see on your phone.
