    Yes completely legal , he is probably doing 2 medicals a year also ! and it was a twin so he probably flying IFR also , so a check ride every year !

    He only had a third class medical. That would have lasted for two years at his age unless the FAA had insisted on more restricted terms.

    As for his IR, he would only have to have meet the experience requirements as laid down in the FAR.

    His mistake I'm afraid was to attemt to fly back when he felt unwell instead of going to a Doctor. A lesson for any pilot of any age.
