    Hey folks,

long cliched story short.. I had a terrible dentist as a child. I had to get an extraction when I was 8 after a sports injury at school and then a nightmare of a filling a few months after due to the dentist chipping the tooth behind it during extraction.

This left me TERRIFIED of the dentist. Now, I'm 28 and due to excessive drinking of bulmers and terrible diet from 17-25 my teeth are in really bad shape. Front ones are fine, but I need 2 - 3 extractions ( 2 bad teeth and 1 wisdom ) and 15 + fillings!

I can't go in, the sound of the drill, the pressure ( not even the pain ) during extraction .. these thoughts keep me awake for extra hours at night. 2nite for example, went to bed at 8.15..Im exhausted, but I feel a slight pain in my mouth and I know its from this tooth that needs extracting. Then I think of the dentist and the tooth and everything and its midnight now and I cant sleep.

I want to go in to a dentist in Galway, get put under, and wake up with all or most of it done. Has anyone had any experience with this, can any dentist do it and is it much extra to get put under? We talking 100euro? 200e? My hands are actually shaking just typing this, this fear is amazing to me.

Jesus thats bad, I had a fear due to bad dentist ,<snip> is my dentist at frank cuddy bridge street, very very good, after a number of visits I'm over my fear, I had a similar situation with wisdom , fillings etc,
Ring them to arrange to see mark.
Seen in local paper recently there is a lady dentist in woodquay who might uses a gas to put you and asleep, they all might have this now, worth ringing, either way dental practice techniques have improved since he hammer and chisel approach of yesteryear , I hope this alleys your fear and the prospect of a nice teeth for year to come, its not as bad as you have yourself worked up to believe it will be, trust me I cancelled 3 times, :-)

yes, you can get it done in galway.

to be put under is mad expensive, because you need an anaestheseologist (sp?), like i think over a grand, not really sure, maybe 1,500...but definitely massively expensive. and that would be done in the (private) bon secour hospital.

i just got put under and had a wisdom tooth in portiuncula hospital in ballinasloe last week. i had to go on a waiting list for ten months. they put me under, didnt feel a thing. whole thing cost me 75 euro!!! (dentist said if i was in any pain, he would ring the hospital striaght away and i would get bumped to the top of the queue).

i should stress, my operation was non routine, requiring a small bit of the jaw to be chipped away, hence the need for a general anaesthetic.

my advise to you would be to go to the dentist and ask him/her if they can refer you on to the hospital in ballinasloe to have all the extractions done under general anaesthetic. i dont know if they can do it for 'routine' work but it can't hurt to ask right? and then if you are in considerable discomfort, ring the dentist, tell him and get seen by the hospital.

if you look up dentists on google and follow their link it should tell you if the offer sedation. i go to a dentist in Mullingar and get sedated for €150 as like you i am so utterly terrified of getting anything done. or if you ring any dentist in your area and ask them if the offer sedation and if not ask them if the know what dentists do - most of them should know who does it.
