Stitch problems 2 1/2 months into trainning

Hi, I have been trainning for around 2 and 1/2 months for a 10 mile which is this sat. I have been trainning 3-4 times a week. However the last 4 times that I have been out I have got a stitch in my right side after only running a mile or 2. I am now unsure if I will be able to run the race. I did not eat for 2 hours before I went trainning and I warmed up and stretched. I don't see why I am getting this now, do they not usually go away once you get fit?

Even when I am not running I can still feel a slight discomfort kind of like a stitch in my side. I know that if I start running it will come again. In the last couple of weeks I have started lifting weights, would this have any effect?

Concentrating on breathing out more fully each time should prevent it I am told from an ex-olympian. Can't say I have tried it.

I would get this checked by your doctor.

Hi I'm running almost a year and still get a stitch sometimes too. I used to get them all the time when I started running. My PE teacher in school (along time ago) used to make us run through stitches while breathing deeply and to be honest it works for me. I just slow down a bit breathe more deeply and it disappears quickly after that. I was worried for races too but it hasn't affected me yet. Just don't go out to fast on race day!

When you feel the stitch coming on, try gripping a sweatband or similar tightly. I think it helps as it takes your mind of the stitch and gets your breathing regulated. If you are running to fast a stitch can come on.
