I have recently been diagosed with cancer and due to the type I have, I am unable to work and support myself anymore.

I have applied for illness benefit and I was told I wasnt getting anything, due to fact was i was self employed in 2010, however i made no money from this at all..

I have contribuated to social welfare in years 06,07,08,09,half of 11 but yet i was told my not entitled..

Is there anything I can do, how do they expect me to get to hospital bills, pay my rent, my electricty , everything else i have to pay ?????

I dont see how there is people out there with nothing wrong with them and they are working and still claiming this benfit and many more , but when I am very sick and could soon be homeless they just tell me I lapsed PRSI in one year and now i deserve nothing.

What is my next step? anyone have this situation before?

First of all sorry for your illness. You can apply for supplementary welfare allowance through your community welfare officer... bring the letter with you stating you have been refused illness benefit and ask cwo about rent allowance and applying for medical card.

You may have to produce business accounts to cwo to show earnings.

I cannot say yay or nay. But that would be my advice to you to apply for supplementary welfare allowance.

Ask your accountant if you can pay the prsi contribution now for 2010, i think you would have had to earn over 5000 to be elidgible to pay prsi, but it is worth a shot.

OP I was thinking about your situation and you could apply for Disability Allowance which is a means tested payment.

I would get myself to Citizens Information office asap as they are usually extremely helpful and should be able to advise you as to what your entitled to...

Sorry to hear that you have cancer.

The Irish Cancer Society can give you a lot of help - if you look up cancer.ie, click on how we can help, then under coping there is a managing your money section which tell you how the cancer society may be able to help you with money - under this is a social welfare guide which will help you see what your options are so you can go back to the local welfare office and apply for a payment.
Also the cancer society offer a driver service which may be able to bring you to and from your cancer treatment. I would also ring the cancer society where you can talk to a specialist nurse on our cancer helpline on 1 800 200 700 from Mon-Thur 9am-7pm and Fri 9am-5pm.
I would read the cancer society website as it may have other information which may be valid for you.
I hope this has been some help for you. I wish you all the best at this difficult time.

    Hi Guys

I'm currently on a disability payment which has been reduced to E80 per week. The fuel allowance has just ended.

I have no other income, and I'm unable to pay bills. Having had Cancer 2 years ago, I seem to be extremely sensitive to the cold. I've contacted the SV de P. First time in my life. I need to heat my house, as I've been without heat for 2 months. I'm freezing. I've asked for assistance, and I've told them I'll pay them back when back on my feet.

I wondered if anyone else has ever received assistance from SVP? I'm mortified asking for help, but I have no choice. Do they visit your home, ask for proof of bills, bank account?

    PM me if you wish.

    Thanks
