Registering change of ownership without taxbook.

    Hi,

i have been offered an old van "for taking away". Unfortunately, the taxbook has been misplaced and the person who is giving me the van never got around to register the van in his name since he acquired it.
I have no issue regarding the bone fides of the guy giving me the van and i know that many individuals never get around to putting their name on the tax book of their projects until they are ready to tax them and put them on the road.
In this case, if I go ahead and take on the van, I would be making application for a replacement tax book for a vehicle that is not in my name and neither has it been sold to me by the last "registered" owner.
Surely it is not that unusual to be sold a vehicle by someone who is not the "registered" owner but yet is the owner of the vehicle nevertheless.
Does anyone know what the procedure is in such circumstances.

There is a form you can get from your local tax office for this.

However, there is a bit of a rigmarole with it.
You need a dealer to stamp it to verify that it is a certain make & model, and you need to have your signature witnessed by a Peace Commisioner.

I had to get a car put in to my name about 4 weeks ago got the log book today there is a bit of runing around but only took about 30 min and did not get charged from the dealer to look at the car and to stamp the form or the solister to stamp the form its well worth doing it.

    Thanks for that.
So a dealer certifies that the actual vehicle exists and is in my possession and the PC certifies that I am who I say I am. Sounds a bit of a rigmarole but if that's the procedure then so be it.
But looking at this another way. Surely the guy who currently owns the van fill out a change of ownership form and I also sign it as the new owner and have it registered it in my name. I could then apply for a replacement tax book.
My reasoning around this is that Tax books used to make reference to the fact that "the registered owner in the book is not necessarily the owner of the vehicle" or words to that effect. That would imply that an individual (including a dealer) other than the one registered on the tax book could legitimately sell the car.

If the registered owner wants a replacement taxboox it is far more straighforward. Simply gets a form signed and witnessed and gets the book over the counter. The other method is a bit messy ;)

Out of interest, what is the form that you need to fill out in order to change ownership without Log book?
