    Hi Folks,

After 10 years in the job I'm now out on my own. I'm afraid I'm not too clued in on the whole state benefits thing so I'd appreciate all the information you might be able to give me. As mentioned I've worked for the last 10 years and have just been made redundant- I believe it will be statutory.

I think I'll get my P45 on Friday so I guess it'll be straight to the local welfare office to look for job seekers on Monday. What will I need to bring with me?

Unfortunately I bought a house with my partner last year. Thankfully the mortgage is relatively small but every little will help. Isn't there something called 'Mortgage Interest Relief'? What will I need to apply for that?

Is there anything else I should be applying for? My partner works part time if that helps.

I'd just like to say that I hate the idea of going on the dole. I'm not a proud man but I like the simple act of working and the pride that having a job and doing a job brings. I will be doing all I can within my power to find another job but I'm pretty anxious as I don't have a 3rd level qualification and the job market is pretty poor. I do however have 10 years experience in a small company and consider myself pretty versatile so I'm going to be all positive and hope that I find something soon.

Did you get any advice from HR in your office before you were let go or does such a function exist where you worked?

Citizens Information Bureau should be able to give you all the advice you need.

I'm afraid we don't have a HR department- the joys of a small family run company. I'll check out the CIB for sure.

Both partners have to be unemployed to get mortgage income supplement I think.

Have you got mortgage payment protection?

You dont have to wait for your P45 to make your claim for jobseekers. If you are now unemployed go to your local sw office straight away and make your claim you can hand your P45 in when you get it. In order to make your claim you will need 2 x photo IDs e.g. passport and drivers licence or passport and long version of birth cert and also proof of address e.g. recent utility bill with your name on it. Download application form UP1 from link below and have it filled out before you go in. This will speed up the process.

If your partner is not in receipt of a sw payment you may be able to add her to your claim as an adult dependant. The amount you will get for her depends on her earnings so if you can also bring down about 3 of her most recent payslips that will also speed up the process. SW offices are closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday.

Below is a link to the criteria for mortgage interest supplement. You apply for this through your community welfare officer.
