Fascinating. So, the taxpayer has paid for the land acquisition, the construction costs and now for any "shortfall" to the operator of the toll booths.

Perhaps we could add up just how much this pointless running sore is costing us?

The figures were in the papers a few months ago. I seem to remember the amount is almost - but not fully - covered by the excess payments from operators of other tolls. Above a certain traffic figure, a % of the tolls go to the NRA and as it rises, so does the %

At the time it appeared that any other tenders to build these roads without those clauses would have cost more; a sharp reduction in traffic and increase in toll aversion means that that hasn't come true. Yet, anyway.
