Hi there. Hopefully the UPC Rep on here sees this.

The father is thinking of changing to UPC for phone and broadband soon. He was wondering what the changeover process involves?

He'd like two points clarified. Firstly is when to give the 30 days notice to eircom? If UPC transfer over phone and broadband before the 30 days is up then he's left open to early cancellation charges from eircom because of cancelling the rolling contract early

The second point is what if eircom cancel the service before UPC have a chance to transfer over the number? He's heard (anecdotally!) that the number could be lost in this case!

    Thanks for any clarification.

UPC does not use the same lines as Eircom.

When UPC is installed you just cancel your Eircom broadband not the phone.

You get a new temporary number from UPC and your Eircom line still works.

You fill out a porting form with UPC for the phone you do not cancel the Eircom phone.

On the day of the switch your UPC line gets the old Eircom number and the temporary UPC number is gone.

On that day the Eircom line goes dead.

UPC uses the TV cables not the phone cables.

What happened in my case was I was connected to the BB and phone (with a UPC phone number). I then went online to www.upc.ie/transfermynumber filled in the details and my number was ported within 48 hours. There was still a dial tone, but it wouldn't allow calls.

Do not notify eircom about account closure before UPC transfer the phone number. In my case, when the phone number was ported, the account was automatically closed.

I am in the process of leaving UPC!!!!! They are a nightmare - The service is brutal and they forgot to mention when I was moving to them that it would be such a big deal to take my number away from them if I ever wanted to leave - Nightmare! Porting forms and everything else that goes with it, such an old fashined process!
