Bottle cage clearance

I bought a Canyon Ultimate CF 9.0 Pro recently and am delighted with it apart from one thing which I have just discovered.

Tonight, I put on two bottle cages (both Lezyne Road Drive Alloy) on the bottle mountings.

More to see how snug the cages are, I put 2 x 500ml bottles in, and this is my issue. Once the first bottle is in (doesn't matter which one, same result), the second bottle doesn't have enough room to go to the bottom of its cage, probably comes up short by 20 - 25mm.

The frame is a 52cm. I know with small frames, larger bottles can be hard to get out of the seat tube cage especially with a sloping crossbar. But this is the bottom of the cage.

Has anyone else experienced this or have I a frame where the bottle mountings have been put in the wrong place?! My main fear is the bottle that isn't in fully will bounce out when full if the road is rough.

There's generally a slot - rather than a hole - in the cage where you thread the mounting screws. This means that there is perhaps 5mm of 'play' or adjustment possible in the positioning of the cage in the frame. Take a close look to see that you have them set up to allow the max space for your bottles.

I'd guess that you have a small frame so things are going to be a bit tight in any case.

I have a 52cm Ultimate CF 9.0 SLX. Mine dates from 2010 so it's possible that they changed the geometry since but I didn't think so. I have 2 cages on my frame and I have no problem of interference between them. Because of the sloping top tube I deliberately chose bottle cages that had a second set of mounting holes so that I could mount the cage on the seat tube lower and that avoids clearance issues with the top tube.

So with the right cages you shouldn't have any issues. My cages are made by Arundel but I imagine there are a variety of cages available these days with dual mounting holes/slots.
