Its a cracking course, played an open there on st Patricks day, it was in excellent condition as they were playing a medal on it that sunday. TBH its well worth the open fee and then some. Might try and make the open myself on Monday, well worth the trip from Dublin. I'm sure Tones could fill you in more as he plays there quite a bit.

Pick your tees carefully - it can be a long round of golf:
    7172 yards (blue)
    6763 yards (white)
    6389 yards (yellow)

36 Photos here - if you want to whet the appetite

Blues are only played once a year so wont be a fear there, whites or yellows, shes enough of a beast off the whites to be fair :)

Played it a few times and holes 3 & 4 are just pure quality! Worth the entrance fee alone.

How much are the comp fees?
Played it there last year, D-Day I called it I saw so much sand! A long track in meticulous condition is what I remember of it.

Must have had a change of heart from your original post staker ;)

It's €25 on Easter Monday for the open - is this a tight course in places, hard to tell from Kevin's photos?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,959 ✭✭✭✭Villain

My home course, it's not that tight at all but there are a few tricky water hazards.

The greens were a few weeks ago and haven't come back that well, they let them grow last week to try and help them so they were awful slow and bumpy at the weekend, hopefully they can cut them down for our medal at the weekend but with Frost many nights this week I wouldn't be certain :(

It plays pretty long off the White tee's, I'll have a look for a hole by hole guide I did before and post it when I find it

Great course for an outing. Close to a motorway. Think we should play of yellows, it is longer that the yardage suggests with some uphill shots.

    Updated hole details.

Hole 1: A straight forward par 4 with the hole below to the left a good drive will leave you about 120 to the front, bunckers either side of the green can punish the approach though, short of the flag will leave an up hill put and the green is well below the fairway so usually a club less here is good. (Driver isn't needed from Yellow tee's)

Hole 2: A long enough Par 4 with a fairway bunker to the right that will catch most drives but a tree to the left that block out approach shots, a decent drive will leave about 160 to the front with bunkers either side in front of the green and another small one to the right, usually half a club extra here is good, tricky green with some interesting breaks! (Fairway bunker shouldn't be in play off Yellow's)

Hole 3: Par 4 Index 1 and it plays it too, stay left of the fairway off the tee just right of the bunker on the left is ideal, a good drive can still leave you 160 to green with water well in play to the right many people with a shot here will play this with a lay up on their second and approach from within a 100. The green is very long with three tiers so don't let the markers deceive you, add 30 yards for the back tier, but again short of the flag with an uphill putt is good, in the summer trying to putt down a tier is very tricky.

Hole 4: A lovely short Par 4 but water all the way to the hole on the right, two options here a mid iron to the start of the fairway hill will you only a 100 to the front with green side bunker as a back drop or driver to the back of the fairway will also leave you a 100 but with water as a backdrop to the green. The green slopes back to the right so landing on the left will usually feed the ball back down to the right. (Green can be in reach for big hitters off the yellow's)

Hole 5: A dog leg right Par 5 drive to the right side of fairway will leave you with best approach, there is a mid fairway bunker in play with the second and water to right past the bunker that isn't visible, a lay up before the bunker only leave about 110 to the green so unless you are going for the green a lay up before the bunker is smart. Lost of green side bunkers to the front and another to the back left but a large green too. (reachable in two for big hitters off the yellow's)

Hole 6: The first Par 3 of the course and like the rest off the whites it's long 187 yards with water short to the right and bunkers all around the green, for the short hitters, short of the green with a chip here can be sensible, flag is usually on bottom tier.

Hole 7: Par 5 dog leg left with a fairways bunkers but a wide fairway, keep the second shot straight and the approach is usually about 110 but the green here can be very deceptive with a mound in front, trust your distance and don't be tempted to go one less, no trouble to the right but bunkers short and to the left, again the green is sloped upwards so short of flag leaves uphill putt.

Hole 8: Par 4 back to the correct tee this year so playing its index 5 again, Out of bounds to the right so left of the tree in the fairway (locals call Marge) is good, approach will be about 150 with bunkers left and right and 2 tiers.

Hole 9: Par 3 and sadly probably the hole that lets the course down the most, 184 yards, the old hole was far nicer, anyway bunkers to the right and to the back, anything left of the green will kick even more left, short of the flag again for an uphill putt.

Hole 10: Par 5 dog left right, just avoid the bunker off the tee you don't need to be long here, I usually play it driver and two PW's. Be careful with the second everything slopes to the water and stay to the Middle side to avoid the overhanging trees in front of the green.

Hole 11: Probably the nicest hole on the course, a long Par 3 over water couple of tee boxes whites is usually 176 or 191, anything short of the green or just up and to the right side will fall back to the water, several bunkers to the left and anything left leaves you trying to stop the ball quickly to escape the roll out to the water. (If you draw the ball be careful)

Hole 12: Par 5 dog leg left and imo one of the easiest on the course, a drive and two PW's for me. Fairway bunkers to the left and center but center bunkes need a big hit to cause trouble. Elevated green with bunkers to the front and right so don't be short with the approach, a few little tiers either side of the green may getting close important to sink to birdie.

Hole 13: Par 4 dog leg left, tight enough with out of bounds to the right and tall tree's to the left block you from the green if you are left off the tee, just right of the bunkers to the left is best position to approach from about 120. This is the narrowest green with no serious trouble to the back and a bunker to the front.

Hole 14: Par 4 index 18, short hole but out of bounds to the right, driver isn't required with bunker to left of fairway well in play. Bunkers to front left and rear left with green falling from right to left.

Hole 15: Par 4 index 2 because of it length, out of bounds to the right but loads of room with bunkers to the left. A long approach of up to 180 with bunker to font right and back left, if your going to lay up keep to the left to take the front bunker out of play.

Hole 16: Par 3 another long Par 3 204 yards from the back of the white tee box, bunkers to front right and left and rear right, if you have a score going a layup to protect a score isn't a bad option, I've used driver on this into the wind.

Hole 17: Par 4 nice and straight with bunkers to the right off the tee and then bunkers to the front right and left at the green.

Hole 18: Par 4 a nice finising hole with water to the right off the tee and also a bunker to the right, approach is to an elevated green with more water short to the right and bunkers to the right and left and also bunker to the back.

Tones, are you a member there? Any idea the what the green fee is if you are staying in the hotel and what chance I would have of getting a tee time on a Saturday or Sunday morning (specifically 21st and 22nd of April).

I am, hmmm not sure if you are staying there but its €40 quid to play normally dude, could even be €50 now on weekends as its back to peak season. Comps are on every sat and sun but id say they'd squeeze you in somewhere, give them a call sure and see what they say :D

Played there on Monday - beautiful and interesting course but unfortunately the greens are awful at the moment. Suspect they'll need another 2/3 weeks to get right after dressing etc.

Yep they are poor alright, the greenkeeper is hoping to start cutting them down next week but the frost we have had this week hasn't helped and there is more frost for the weekend, April is colder than March and February so far!

They have filled out well though since the rain so hopefully another week and they will start rolling out, they can get bloody quick in the summer.

I used to love the 'old' 8 & 9 there.... could quietly wreck a card, especially because course management was alien to me when I was on that 8th tee and I would always try and take on the direct line to the green. The 9th was a gem from a back tee.
I think they are both a bit meh now.
